I have an Android, however, the crap has begun and I wondered apart from full on getting an old Nokia brick if this should happen. What other phone operating systems have you tried? Has anyone ever put Linux on an phone and how on earth did you pull it off?

I have ever herd some crackpots manage to dual boot their phones but it seems to be really rare. I have never seen it done.

I have read about people installing Linux on tablets but it doesn't sound like the easiest thing to do. Installing a custom bootloader and custom Android OS is pretty easy on lots of devices. I have Graphene OS on my phone and crDroid on my tablet and the install process was simple. When it comes to Linux, it's apparently difficult to find drivers for the touch screens, wifi/data hardware and all that stuff.

IIroncally, Google has some of the best linux-phones out there (For putting it on yourself), With what @NicWelds said. Graphene OS is like a de-googled version of Android (In which itself is a fork of linux). If you want to look into it- https://grapheneos.org/ . Google sadly controls the Notifications on Regular android, so it does affect Graphine a little. But it's still a good project to look into. Please keep in mind, however, only supports G Pixels.

It's been a couple years, but I managed to install Debian in my android samsung galaxy note 20 with a helper app. Linux for android, or something like that. It wasn't useful in any practical way though. My phone was rooted and I had gotten rid of so much on it. It is very possible to do, but most apps will be practically unusable due to the small screen size. I gave up on it fairly quickly. Maybe it's easier and more practical now as I did this few years ago as an experiment.

Years ago one of my Linux friends from the Ubuntu Forum told me about Ubuntu Touch.
It's a bit of a learning curve as I studied the instructions in the past.

A friend of mine purchased a Pine Phone and he was at the time very pleased with it.
