Light Weight Distro For Dedicated-Zoom Virtual Machine

It happens on my computer but not on my wife's.
I don't have a paid subscription, she does. Do you?

No, I do not pay.

HOWEVER... I seem to have less problems if I sign into my account before joining a meeting
Maybe if we pay, all these problems go away?
Probably!

Also, at some point weren't you using Windows when Zoom exhibited this behavior

It pains me to say this, I mean I REALLY don't want to admit that the one good thing about Giant is that I didn't have these problems.

I ran away from the Giant last year so I can't say if things have changed for those who follow blindly as well...

I would rather deal with the problem with my eyes wide open...

I've always assumed that the fault lies with Zoom. :)
The Wife used Linux and Windows with Zoom and had problems.

The daughter setup some app on her android cell phone that works without any problems.

Have no idea what it is since I don't use any of them social media apps.

Linux forums are the only social media websites I have.

I only use them to the extent that I have to.
I know folks that use social media apps all of the time and never hear them complain.

I don't have a clue.

Perhaps the paid versions are what they have.

I can see the advantage of using some social media for visiting with family and friends.

I can see where social media apps have there place in the business world and medical world.

I just wish they wouldn't be so intrusive about collecting my personal information.

I would sure have a look at the online web apps and see if those work without issues.

Good Luck with them and again don't let any of this stuff frustrate you to burn out it ain't worth it.

Ditto

This gives me another idea....
  • Install a second browser
    • Install the Zoom extension in browser
    • Only use that browser for Zoom and hope for the best
Good Luck with them and again don't let any of this stuff frustrate you to burn out it ain't worth it.
This in turn gives me another idea....

I could explore all the ways I can evade data collection by social media apps and apps like Zoom....

I don't get burned out. I get frustrated and step away for bit. This is usually when the solution pops into to my mind. Then I get started again.

I like challenges. I thrive on them!

@Mike-W0BTU :-

You can "join" someone else's meeting without needing to sign-in. You DO, however, need to log-in to your (free) a/c in order to start meetings. So, you log-in here:-

https://zoom.us/signin

....then just select 'Meetings' from the Webapp drop-down in the top-right corner.

I have mine set to open - from Chrome - as a 'windowed' app. Login is automatic, via LastPass's autologin functionality, and the entire thing is launched - from a dedicated launch wrapper script within the 'portable' Chrome's self-contained directory - via its own Menu entry.....so it acts exactly like the desktop 'client'.

This last bit is actually quite straight-forward in mainstream distros. You select to set it as a webapp, and a menu entry is automatically installed FOR you. It's a bit more fiddly in Puppy, due to the way .desktop files/Menu entries are handled by the JWM window manager.

Correct. This is the way I usually join meetings.

I've done this too. You also have to sign in if you want to add a pretty picture to your profile!

This is mine...

@The Duck :-

THAT, my friend, is SO true. Life's way too short to get upset by anything like this.....

More than 1/2 of my life! That's the reason for Zoom. For the last year my only option for meetings has been online
I also had to look that up, though I had a little bit of a clue, having taken part in a local C.R. group for a few years.

Congratulations to you.

Did you see me -not- "like" that with a "beer" emoji?

While off topic, my congratulations to our resident cat.

This isn't the place to indulge myself. I'll simply say that I've been on Suboxone for years after having been a passenger in what can only be termed a spectacular automobile wreck.

This could be a side thread in and of itself, nestled somewhere in off-topic, though we must avoid any religious talk.

Hey Sherri, when you get a chance, perhaps you can post a screenshot of GParted showing the current state of the drive you have your LM 22.1 installed on. I am particularly interested in the space used and space free.

I have to go out for a bit, but I will start working on an idea for you when I get back.

Cheers

Okay!

I'll put it in a new thread. I got absorbed in watching those old Mac v PC commercials!

Cool, Ta.

...so you have heaps of space available.

I will deal more with this on my tomorrow, but in the meantime, you could take a read of my Thread here

https://linux.org/threads/how-to-in...t-need-for-a-usb-dvd-sd-wizards-corner.56273/

which provides a way for you to test lightweight distros (Debian-Ubuntu-Mint-based) with a view to installing for your Zoom meetings, without the need for a USB stick or other removable media.

You could install the thread's subject package straight onto your current LM 22.1 install, and then start as soon as you download an iso.

Be aware that before you can install another distro, you will need to use GParted from an external source such as a Linux Mint Live stick, or GParted Live stick, to carve back some space from your current setup, for a second distro to go onto. You cannot do that from your GParted currently installed, as it stands (safety feature).

Once a second distro is installed, the world is your oyster, as you can use the GParted from one to manipulate the other, and all unallocated space.

I would also suggest taking a look at

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-weight_Linux_distribution

for ideas, last updated 24th March, and maybe

https://www.techradar.com/news/best-lightweight-linux-distro

and focus on the ones that are Debian-based (use distrowatch.com to check if you are not sure)

Questions on grml-rescueboot I can field over at my thread.

Cheers
