I'm going to summarize my conclusions about using Zoom on 3 separate Linux Mint distributions, one of them in a virtual machine and 3 separate browsers. I have not yet used other distros and therefor am not qualified to comment on them.

CAVEAT
My conclusions are not based on typical use of the Zoom Workplace platform. Hosting and chairing meetings are very different from attending a meeting on the Zoom platform.

If you DO NOT host or chair, you have probably never experienced the endless frustration that comes with Zoom. It is reasonable to conclude that you also haven't tried a multitude of solutions, none of which were effective remedies.

If you DO host or chair meetings with large numbers of people, my experience may interest you.

  • For me, I think I have found the best solution.
  • From my laymen point of view, Zoom is not a stable application in the Mint OS
  • I have used Zoom in 3 different Linux Mint versions and 3 browsers.
    • The best options have been LMDE 6 in a virtual machine followed by Linux Mint 21.3 on a physical machine.
    • The worst version has been 22.1
  • Browsers would be my last choice.
    • I tried Chromium, Opera and Firefox. None of them are suitable for chairing and hosting meetings.
      • It does not matter whether or not you use the link to join without 1st installing the app. It doesn't work.

  1. Zoom seems most stable in Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 in a virtual machine.
    • There are only 2 situations that I have noticed significant disruptions
      • During times of typically high internet traffic
      • Certain settings in a VPN, in my case NordVPN
        • Zoom will work with the Open VPN protocol
        • Zoom would not connect when I changed the DNS server addresses.
          • Other changes to VPN settings are beyond my current knowledge and understanding.
    • System information

I suspect that with more resources and a physical machine Zoom would perform better on a machine with LMDE 6.

Bottles was of absolutely no use.
