Granted, it's a virtual machine. I haven't used Windows on my devices since Vista. I haven't used a Windows system newer than Windows 7.

It'll be a new experience for me.

There might be a little :wine:involved behind the scenes.

I should make that emoji smaller.

Have fun with it. I installed Win 11 months ago, maybe as long as a year, I don't really recall. I fire up the VM every month or so and let it update for a couple of hours. I've tried to find something useful to do with it, but so far have been unsuccessful. It just takes up space on my SSD, but I keep it around just in case the unthinkable happens and I actually need it.

I wouldn't like to be holding my breath waiting for that occasion to arise.

I'll maybe be playing around with winOS for a little bit tomorrow - someone dumped a surface laptop (the first version from 2017) in the recycling box at work so I snagged it. no idea if it will even power on, but if it does then I'll update firmware and try tossing Arch on it - but maybe Fedora if that doesnt work. not that I need another laptop, but it'll be a fun little project

No, I'm certainly not holding my breath. I really should get into it more, because my brother-in-law will never move away from Windows, and he needs my help every now and then to fix broken stuff on his machine. I struggle with it, because I haven't run Windows in so long, I'm not sure I ever upgraded to Win2k. I used Windows 7 at work because that's what was on the company computers, but I didn't get involved in it more than running the required software. I'm very rusty with maintaining and repairing Windows.

Let us know how it goes! I've wondered about what kind of experiences Linux users have in Win11, good and bad.
Windows 7 was the last one we used here before we switched to Linux.

I can't answer for w11, but from what I have seen it is worse than W10, so I like a clean desktop, background image and essential icons only, no conky or other rubbish insulting my eyes, last year i got a new to me car, sat nave had not been updated since new so my first task, i found the download site, it would only work win windows or Mac, tried wine, bottle and Vm but still would not work so I grabbed my W8.1 disc [from when i was still fixing computers] and install led it on an old 60gb SATA HDD,
it did the job and W8 looks a bit like Cinnamon and xfce so easy to navigate, earlier this month i decided to update to the latest maps for the satnav, had 2 problems first was they no longer supported W8 and the 60 gb HDD was not big enough, so next day a 120gb ssd arrives from my regular supplier of re-use parts, and i installed W10, no problems, except it was not intuitive to me [yes i know i could have reconfigured it but didnt want to waste the time,]it took quite a while to find the apps i needed after downloading them, and the screen was a total mess, thats W10 now a neighbour had some problems with W11, I was astounded in the space of a few minutes how many adverts were coming across her screen.

Good luck! The experience won't probably be as genuine as when using it when running it on hardware if you are looking for daily driving experience. Same as I'm not up-to-date with different Linux distributions when it comes to daily driving. However I do use vm's to test out something to help someone who is running into something here on the forums, from over the years my Linux knowledge and experience is enough to do that but I will still miss some things sometimes.

@Mike-BTU
something Strang has happened, I just connected my W10 drive and switched on to take a pict of the desktop, and got a message please wait windows needs to repair your system, when it had finished, i got a message that windows had removed some programs that were incompatible with my machine, when i checked the list one item said desktop, so clicked the ok button and i didnt have the boxy cluttered desktop i started with, but the classical one, dont ask me why as long as it still works when i next update my maps in October.

I am trying to get as far away as possible from all windblows and goolag related crap . The invasion of your privacy and the million backdoors to stuff forced updates down your throates is mindbogeling. Actually it's a bit like Gates killshots roflmao they keep handing em out for free. And we all know that free means actually not free there is always a catch. So out the door here Microsoft and related google facebook and now whatsapp i like my privacy.

Can you next time just call them by their real name, name calling a company just to show your dislike towards them doesn't do anything. As there's Linux users calling Windows users with forms of that name and it doesn't do anyone any good. Yes not many people here like those companies either but no reason for not using their real name.

I hope all Goes well!

Just finished a dual-boot Vista and MX on a old dell Inspiron not too long ago. 1/2 for old photo storage (WMC) and MX 25+Fluxbox for internet (did not install the drivers for it on vista). Just something about Areo.....

I didn't play with it for very long. I found it confusing and needed to use the search function to find anything. As I'm a curious fella, it's pretty easy to activate without paying.

Also, I don't know what magical path I took during the installation, but it did not ask me for any real information. I didn't have to give them an email address, an MSFT account, or anything of that nature.

It annoyed me quickly. I spent too long trying to get the display resolution working. That never did work, even with the add-ons installed.

I also didn't use it long enough to get a feeling for it.

Yea, that's interesting.. The past few times I did it, it required that stuff with no escape... Maybe an older .iso?

Have you had windows on that computer in the past? if so it may be their system recognised it, last year when I put W8 on mine it recognised my machine and signed me in to my account that I had forgotten I had [ a business account dating back to when i started building new machines from scratch and a beta tester for them]

Yea, that could be it.. but it's concerning that It could see through a VM if that did happen.. Aren't they usually "independent"?
