Just a heads up for yt-dlp users; starting with the next release a JS runtime (such as Deno or Node) will have to be installed on your system for downloads to work (for one particular site). The relative links:

I always use a browser extension (I don't remember the name right now) to download the videos.

It would be affected with the Youtube changes? Don't know how are developed that kind of tools.

Yes, it's a Google/YouTube thing. They mention it in the first link, if you're inclined to read it.

I wonder how Stacher is going to deal with this. Stacher is pretty awesome. It'll even pull in the dependencies, if you don't already have them. I suspect they'll be able to continue doing this, or maybe announce a way to do it manually. Stacher7 is a great application for both new and advanced users.

I can relate! I miss things all the time. I tend to do more skimming than I do actually reading with full intent.

And, yeah, Stacher7 is amazingly good. I stumbled across it a couple of months ago, not too long ago, because I wanted to build up some new playlists and my media files are scattered all over the place.

Once you get it working (which isn't hard), you just copy/paste and point/click. You can download tracks, you can download entire playlists, you can turn the downloads into various audio files (including .flac), etc...

It works just fine for videos, should you be interested in downloading videos. (I'm not into downloading videos from YouTube. They're not so important that I worry if they're gone tomorrow. I may download a few movies here and there.) Behind the scenes it uses ffmpeg and yt_dlp behind the scenes.

That said, it looks like Stacher uses Reddit for their support page. I've gone there and left a post to see what they'll do about it, or to at least make them aware of it. I suspect they'll just include one of the JS runtime packages out there, perhaps even the one that's recommended.

Me either, I watch the videos from the YT app, sometimes through YT Music for videoclips.

Probably they will find the way to continue with the develop of the app. It's like a game, difficult increases and you need to update your strategy

For a while, YouTube was stopping you from using the site if you blocked ads. There would sometimes be a few updates per day for those who wanted to continue using YouTube with an adblocking extension.

I now use Brave for YouTube. It's a dedicated browser, just used for YouTube-related things. (I might open a tab to search for something mentioned in a video, but 99% of the time it's working will be when it's working on displaying YouTube videos.)

They appear to have largely given up. YouTube hasn't griped about my ad blocking in quite a while. Though, for a short time they just recently complained that I was using a VPN. I found that unusual, but it's fine now with a VPN turned on.

It's abussive. I don't remember how many years passed since started using YT Premium. But when I needed to check a video or similar without my account... OMG, it's crazy.

I has tried Brave sometime ago but didn't find it sweetie. Now I'm using Firefox and very happy with the premium account, not only for videos because YT Music is also great for me.

I started my CS degree in September, one month ago.

Have fun! I've known a number of people who hold a Ph.D. in Comp. Sci. and they're all doing very well. Lots of people confuse this degree with other academic pursuits. For example, someone with an advanced CS degree really shouldn't be doing a lot of programming. You'll learn to be adept in multiple languages, as a matter of your course work. Day to day, out in the field, programming won't be something you do much of.

Though, some folks will parlay their CS degrees into programming jobs, you'll learn all sorts of other stuff not related to programming. If you're going to stick it out and get a more advanced degree, you'll find all sorts of interesting jobs.

Thanks dude, appreciate your tips. At the moment I don't know exactly what I want to do with the degree. I'm from Spain and here people use it for a itinerary called "Software engineering" and like its name says, it's about programming. I would like to learn about Linux kernel, packages and similar, so... I'm trying to do a "path" to follow to reach that. Maybe I will open a thread asking people who can guide me a bit ^^.

This wouldn't be my last step as student, but I'm very happy with the start of this adventure

They've a big infrastructure and costs must be... terrible so, what they offer isn't bad, but some ads are soooo long...
Yeah that's true and I'm agreed with you. Also I have YT Premium and also have Google One since years ago because Google Photos and Drive for me it's very comfortable.

Either have deactivate any option about privacy. For me, many years ago privacy with Google was gone, I preferred to flow with the Google suite and all what can bring me than "waste" my time keeping them out of my control.

I do not like the title 'engineer'. In fact, in many regions, the word 'engineer' is a 'protected title'.

An engineer is accountable for their work. There are legal consequences for negligence and harm. That's not true for a programmer.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a good programmer. I've hired many of them. My contention is with the 'engineer' portion of that specific title. A good programmer is a great asset for a business that needs to develop software. But, they're not legally accountable for bugs or failures.

Your English is better than my Spanish. I can muddle my way through most of South America, but I'm not that great at it. I also didn't learn Spanish formally, so I have no idea when it comes to correct spelling. I can read Spanish to some extent, enough to get the gist of it. I just can't spell it, and my grammar is not that great.

Totally agreed. Here in Spain the CS Degree it's called literally: "Computer engineering". But when you finish it you can't have the legal consequences as a mechanical engineer, or building engineer. It's very complex but as you said, finally.

this affected me yesterday. wound up spending over 80mib. for having the "right" executable updated on 22-oct. sadly another week passed. so i might have to download it again. anyway i only care about 1980's pop-rock music videos. occasionally mid-1990's electronic music by new york and european colonels. being a teenager was traumatic for me. but i cannot abandon it in my mind.
