You're welcome.

To get rid of that old .config of Gimp hanging around on your system run:

sudo rm -rf /home/ale/.config/GIMP

Once that's removed your out of the woods.-

Now you can either download and install the current version of Gimp 2.10.36.
OR> use APT or Synaptic Package Manager to install Gimp.

To search with APT run:

apt-cache search gimp

To find the stable version run:

apt list gimp

*If there is an additional version in the repository the command-line will tell you to use the '-a' switch to see it.

I would read this before trusting a snap package on your system.

I don't know but I think you should run GIMP v2.8 if possible, then determine what needs to be preserved.

I'm not a GIMP expert but adding another version on top of all this may not work. LOL We might confuse 'em.

I've sort of followed the thread. I'd try removing all the GIMP instances and starting over, but that's just me.

So I removed it from Synaptic and installed it from Ubuntu Software.
Now I can open PNG files but G'MIC filters don't show up.
Any ideas how to fix that?
I also tried to run GIMP from Terminal with sudo gimp but I got this result:

mkdir: cannot create directory '/run/user/0': Permission denied
Authorization required, but no authorization protocol specified
Cannot open display:

I was going to advise the latest Debian v12.3 comes with GIMP v2.10.34. But I noticed this news item on Distrowatch.

I upgraded on two installations before taking notice of this news. I'm on another one right now but can't upgrade because of this.

EDIT: I'm sorry if I provoked anybody with this comment. I checked again and the version/release/subrelease of GIMP changed into Debian v12.4 is GIMP v2.10.34.

Hello

I'm using GIMP 2.10.34 on Ubuntu 22.04. I also installed GMIC 3.3.1.

My problem is that GIMP doesn't open PNG files (I got an "Unknown file type" error message) and GMIC is not visible. Unless I launch GIMP from terminal, using the command sudo gimp. Then I can open PNG files and I have GMIC.

Another peculiar thing is that, if I launch GIMP from terminal, the version launched is 2.10.30.

So I'm a little bit confused and I would need some help, please.

Checking my version it says 2.10.36 is the latest version. I am on Linux Mint 20.2. I have it installed and start from the menu.

Thanks, I used the command "apt install gimp-gmic", the result is I still cannot see GMIC filters... BUT now I can launch gimp from terminal ("sudo gimp") and when I do so the GMIC filters show up.
I'd say it's an acceptable compromise, isn't it?

Why do you need superuser privilege to open the program?

If you're going to do that then do this:

sudo gimp &

then you could at least close the terminal that you had to do that in by typing exit and pressing ENTER. Otherwise, we have to find another way to do this so you could launch GIMP as your regular user account.
