Hello everyone, I'm new here. I was looking for a linux experts forum and it seems I found it!

I'm going to install a linux distro on my pc and I wanted a few suggestions on which one could be the best option for my needs.

First of all I will provide informations about the computer I want to install a linux distro on (it's about 10 years old):
Intel(R) core™ i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60 Ghz
RAM: 16 GB

My experience with linux is limited to my junior software developer job: I had the possibility to connect to client servers to move or copy folders, restart services, unzip files, and edit some configuration files, all via the terminal of course. My ultimate goal now is to learn to use Linux well enough to take advantage of its potential and also because I read it's a very important skill to have if you want to work in the cybersecurity field, as I would love to do in future.
For these reasons I wouldn't like a distro too much user-friendly where you are not exposed enough, but at the same time I still want to be able to use my PC even if I'm a beginner of course.

Reading online and listening to colleagues suggestion I was oriented with Fedora or Debian, but someone said they could be very hard. So I would like to receive new suggestions from expert users about which distros could be the best ones for me.

Thanks!

Hello @Kocciacus
Welcome to the Linux.org forum, enjoy!
as to which Distro to install your machine looks like most distros would work for you. I always advise try several on usb sticks live then choose the one that suits your needs the best. Hardware, tastes, and workflow.
as for ease of use I would say try Mint first. Also have a look at this page it will give you step by step learning of Linux
Enjoy and happy Linuxing :)

basically any distro will get you there - I'd recommend Arch. you'll be forced to learn things and the documentation is really good. if you're into the Corporate/Enterprise side of things then you may want to go with Rocky as it's basically a fork of RHEL.

Your machine will run any distribution you fancy

there is a newish distro especially aimed at first time Linux/old hand Windows users, see https://www.linux.org/threads/windows-lookalike.57484/

your machine is similar in spec to may Dell laptop, on that [by choice] I run Mint LMDE version and Parrot home edition, I have also run Debian stable with driver pack and MX Linux,
BUT as I always say, what is right for me or any other member, may not be right for you, only you can choose.

if you are just starting I suggest try a few out such as ubuntu and fedora, maybe even mint. But stay away from the ones that you have a steep learning curve, so stay out of ARCH and KALI.

I'd consider using the same distro that they use at your work. Just use the desktop version of that same distro. Pretty much any distro you use at work will have a desktop version.
