Firstly a huge thank you to all of you who have offered a very warm welcome to the form!
I'll be honest from the start, I AM A LINUX NOVICE, there's just no escaping the fact that my experience of using Linux is very limited, although I do have some which goes back over 15 years. Why now after all of these years do I want to use Linux? to be honest, it's something I've been meaning to do since day one at Uni but like most things in life, I just never got around to it because of other priorities. When I completed my MCE, focus orientated solely towards my role. Occasionally I've had to use a Linux system, nothing to taxing - Usually running a scrip or start/stopping a service etc. I mean I am able navigate my way around and am comfortable with the core commands and understand the file structure, I just simply don't have the experience to be even close to be competent. But why now? My young son, he is studding computer science at school and everything is orientated towards MS and cloud based systems which is all well and good in the modern digital world. But I would love for him to become comfortable with the freedom and versatility that Linux offers. My intention is to build a web or media server running Ubuntu which can then use to administer and learn what happens - I know we have cloudbased services these days, but there's something about the physical server that you can see and appreciate how they work. Personally, I believe it's important to understand what actually goes on in the background. Plus, its fun.....what an amazing way to spend time with your son!!
My IT experience can be pretty much summed up like this. After graduating from Uni, I spent time programming in C/C++ before accidentally finding myself in the server team. I worked primarily with Novell Netware and Lotus email, but after migrating over to Window servers and running Citrix win-terms I was able to gain expedience administrating Nortel Networks. Now I am retired, I am endeavoring to learn Linux for pleasure and to spend time with my son.
Lastly, I am always grateful of guidance and experience and admit I am a NOVICE!!!!!!!
