Are You Using Balena Etcher

This seems like a non-problem, really.
This seems like a non-problem, really. The application is well known and widely recommended. Anyone can do what they wish (within the terms of the license agreement, which includes keeping the source code open and free) with this software.
Amen.
It does mean that I can drive in a spirited manner without fear of being caught.
LOL....nicely put !....does the term 'rev head' come to mind ?

I suppose if people want to use something that collects your data, then they can't complain.

Verifiably untrue: its like when people say "if you don't vote, you can't complain", anyone can complain...the only one who has really been complaining this whole thread is you...

Not that specific term, but yes. I have multiple automobiles and live in the twisty mountain roads. I've got vehicles suited for different things and styles of driving. Driving is a hobby of mine.

So alerting people that software is collecting their data is complaining...you have a strange way of looking at things.

I see no need for condescension. Bob sees a possible problem with Balena etcher, and judging by the long running post at git hub there is some cause for concern with balena. The issue there, has been running since sometime in 2023...it may not be directly related to data problems, but it is of concern. ie if balena are failing to take care of matters such as this what else are they ignoring/not fixing.

Version 2.1.2 is the latest recommended version, and as I noted above, a patch was released as recently as 7th May 2025 dealing with removing analytics....and as a result the "anonymously report errors to balena.io" has been turned off by default.

So quite likely....there was some cause for concern. Balena did not turn that off by default for the fun of it.

The question mark remains...regardless of the age of the complaint

Okay bob, thank you for your wondrous service to humanity, i dont know what i would do without you.

Well at least you're honest and you're welcome.

Just an FYI for readers, with my experiences last 24 hours.

At GitHub, here, https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/releases/

...you can click on the caret beside Assets to get a list which incudes both the AppImage and the .deb for the 2.1.3 Pre-release version.

I downloaded them yesterday.

The AppImage still required you to go to the cog Settings to uncheck the option to report. The .deb, which I installed with GDebi, has it off by default.

I used it to successfully burn and install Rhino Linux to one of my hard drives, no issues.

I suppose one could install WireShark or similar sniffer tool to see if it phones home even after disabling, or not having, the reporting feature.

I am not worried about it.
