Age Verification - Linux.org's Official Stance

At what point will these wierd freaky pigs just leave us the f**k alone? or is this some sort kink for them? I dont get it. I have also noticed that a huge amount of people dont seem to realise how danger and how insaine this is. These are mechanism thats facists can and will use.
Most people here know the dangers and don't like it either.

I want to leave earth and escape these invasive wierdos. LEAVE US ALONE!!!

Is Ubuntu going to comply with age restrictions?
What does it matter? if your favorite discord is going to ask your to upload your ID, Ubuntu can't do anything with that, they can decide not to support it, but then you'll have upload your ID manually, more work for you hah.

I dont really use Discord anymore, I never really liked it in the first place. Its very rare I even look at it, if it were to shut donw tomorrow I wouldnt miss it. The communities there are rarely useful, very chaotic and mostly full of children, whos cluless parents proably just left them with an Ipad.

Parental control is configured with an elevated system account, a child uses non privileged account and can't bypass anything.
For web, IDK but VPN may exist that limits which sites one can visit.
I know DNS servers do exist that are kid friendly for instance.

There are many options.
i have an excellent idea that no one must have ever thought of. These idiot parents should just not leave a pc in their kids bedroom. In the end everyone knows that at some point little jimmy will still find porn on daddys computer without having to look too hard. And the arsehats will still make it our problem.

kids just happen to be their excuse, if it wasn't that they would pick up on criminals and hackers or something else because their true objective is population control.

At this point even birds on trees know that, the only exception are elderly people who don't use computers, for them this is OK because they grew up without internet.

kids just happen to be their excuse

We have to skirt the politics, so this statement will be vague...

I've touched on this already, but I find any policy suspect when it's framed with 'think of the kids'.

In formal debate, it's known as a 'plea for pity' or an 'appeal to emotion'. It makes those folks who are against it be 'against protecting the children'. Nobody wants to be in that category.

It's also a really effective way to get people on your side. It silences critics at the same time.

Sadly, we no longer teach people critical thinking or reasoning. We also don't teach civics these days, though it's touched upon in a class often called 'social studies'.

It makes me glad that I managed to get a solid education. Unfortunately, the average voter is stymied by anything longer than what fits on a bumper sticker. We've turned to jingoism and using outrage as a currency.

And, no... No, I don't know how to fix it. While I have some ideas, they wouldn't fit on a bumper sticker.

It takes longer to counter 'think of the children' than it does to say it. They know this. They count on this.

Yeah, I'm a bit frustrated with the whole mess.

Maybe an asteroid will come and wipe us out, and we can start again. For the sake of the universe, I sometimes hope that significant numbers of humans don't actually make it out of this gravity well we call the Earth.

The simple solution is allow the parents to properly discipline their kids.

When I say properly discipline kids I mean beat them with a belt on their butts or backhand them a few times and they will mind.

My mother took charge of the house which meant disciplinary action also.

When it came to the point where my father had to get involved with disciplinary action there was nothing left to be said.

My father didn't screw around he would backhand us a few times and or wear our butts out with a belt.

When my father got done disciplining us we didn't misbehave for quite some time.

Parents today need to be held accountable for their kids actions period.

Parents need to discipline their kids The Old Fashioned Way.

Government needs to stay out of parental disciplinary actions.

Today's generation or society has become weak and complacent.

This is only my opinion.

Parents need to discipline their kids The Old Fashioned Way.
Exactly this, I recall times when even not your parent was allowed to 'teach' you a lesson.
Today if you say something to a kid that's not yours you can expect to be accused for being a pedo, (even if you say nothing but just look at a kid lol)
What's worse some people don't like the old fashioned discipline, they say a kid must be feeling free to avoid "mental complexes".

To be honest, I've never really understood the craze for Discord either. It still works fine for small groups of friends, but large communities often turn into chaos with a lot of spam, noise, and a constant stream of messages. Sometimes a simple forum or even a regular chat seems much more convenient and calm.

This is your thread too - let us know what you think.
I'm not American and I'm not asked for age anywhere (mostly because I update packages selectively) but even I find that law absurd. The governor who passed that bill clearly never had to deal with linux users before. I'm pretty sure he's never even seen the thing called "Linux" in his life! Many of us are accustomed to do everything ourselves, we have access to the source code and if not completely removing the age verification, we could easily find a workaround. Not so much about hiding anything but because it has been enforced on us. Many of us love the freedom linux gives us and we won't stand for taking it away.

Welp, I didn't think I'd see some people here be so casual about child's physical abuse, huh. That's especially weird since we already have more than enough research (just google it or whatever) on how it's not an efficient method of teaching kids accountability in the long term.

Among all the ways it could go wrong, (and speaking as someone who was a kid once), I've seen way too often how other kids would just become sneakier and better at lying to avoid the next punishment instead of actually realizing that what they did was genuinely bad.

They will get what they want all of the time. They will normalize and mandate whatever tool/implant/verification method(s) they want you to have. This is just a baby step. The war is for the mind. I will die before being implanted.

Yay!!!

About time somebody came to their senses.....better "late" than "never", in this case.

Thanks for the heads-up, @Condobloke.

Mike. :D

...let us know what you think.

I understand (or at least I think I do understand) that this laws may be created to better filter real users from robots or bots (properly called computer BOTs) to avoid things like spam for things that I'm not gonna mention for respectful purposes, as well as to control better the users overall where with this age verification they won't be able to trick the system so easily and therefore minors won't be brute forcing the web to create accounts on platforms where they're not allowed to be in.

But as we all know, humans are curious and sometimes they won't take a no for an answer and so there might be in the very near future one or several ways to bypass this system, they always find a way to by pass that.

For example, Roblox's age verification system is a joke, since all it asks you is your ID, passport or driver's license if I'm not mistaken and so... Like, it's kinda stupid you know? Because, my sister asked for my ID so she can pass the verification prompt, I lend it to her and it just worked! ~ don't worry, she just barely plays on roblox and I'm my country she's only a couple of months left before turning the mayority adulthood age, she plays responsibly and won't fall on any web threats trick that might be on the web in general ~ this system is terrific as anyone can just pick anyone else's ID whether it's a family member or not and WALA, they're in.

And like, I don't disagree on this laws, I don't reject the verification system that's now taking all over the digital world and the web as a whole but let's remember that this things won't be enough to protect children on the web.

As I read somewhere on the internet, and something I personally agree on is that:

"We should not protect children or anyone from the internet, we should teach them about the good and the bad thing of it and how to use it responsibly. Ergo, we should protect them while they surf the web, on the internet."

Recently MS on its discord forbid users from calling MS Microslop, which is a derogatory term of its AI policies being pushed everywhere, threatening users with ban, but they achieved nothing except making the community even louder. (google about it, it's funny)

poor microsoft, they can't handle the consequences of their actions in the slightest.

GET OUT OF HERE, WINDOWS MONOPOLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
