I had this great idea that I was going to revive my Mac Pro 6.1 and use it again as my daily driver. After completing my feature film, it quickly became abandoned, the Mac OS was already near the maximum release, held back by Davinci Resolves quirkiness and risk of not being able to control my feature films project file. So rather than risk issues, I stopped updating anything in order to safely release my film.
Now that a few years have passed, I see Davinci Resolve for example is up to Version 20+ and I am stuck back at 17. The Mac OS has on more update/upgrade available but then no longer supported. So Linux became my fancy.
What if I could install Linux and bring Davinci Resolve all the way up to Version 20+ and keep this machine alive?
So here is what I did and the summary so far of the challenges I faced.
Knowing very little about linux and quickly having my eyes gloss over as endless technical jargon and command line codes were being quoted, ChatGPT was my only friend.
BUT WAIT, Sure this forum and others were indispensable, but let's face it. The extensive troubleshooting required was not going to work for me over forum chats.
So here is a summary of my work that took 4, 2-4hr sessions over the last weekend.
