Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon (I think)_ Installation problems and navigation

These start with the installer page - the installer is known as Ubiquity, made by Ubuntu and also used by Linux Mint and some others

Before you start, if you like you can go to the Start Menu (LM) and click, on the left will be an icon for Settings, go into it and disable screensaver, to Power and switch Power saving off (I switch both to never) and if you want increase your mouse cursor size such as I have. Then go on with below

...so you start by clicking the installer (sometimes a double click) and we'll go from there.

choose your language and click continue

choose your keyboard and then continue

check to install the multimedia codecs and click continue. You can also see the blues above mounting up with the white steps to go. At the bottom.

Now this stage may take some time to complete, it has not broken - go make a cuppa tea or coffee and come back if you like.

During this stage, you may get a popup window such as I show below

xEb1vFi.png

I am ready to click Yes there, but it does not matter much, it is covered with the next new screenshot.

After making that choice, the codec install may still keep going on for a bit, as long as you see movement continuing like below, it's still hard at work

When the codecs are finished the next screen is where you make a choice

... and it is an important one, and note that it is different to similar ones you have seen earlier, as those were old pics.

The default is as shown, and that's where you would be dualbooting or multi-booting with Windows, Linux (one or more) and so on, if you wanted all the rest of your disk space dedicated to Linux Mint.

If you want to blow away Windows, it is the second option - erase and install.

The third option, Something else, is where you know what you are doing, and you can be more flexible with partition sizes, drives and so on.

I can't take you further for now, without installing and I already have it (Virginia Cinnamon) but while the installer is copying files you will be shown a screen where you can choose a login/user name, choose whether to encrypt or not (don't) and so on.

On completion, the installer will give you the option to continue testing (which is what you have been doing all along, apparently) or to reboot.

When you are ready to reboot do so, and it will prompt you to remove the stick and press Enter and away you go.

Cheers

login/username and password, I should have said

When I try to change tabs in the browser, sometimes there's a big lag.

That is because of two things
1. You are on a USB stick which will be slower than the full install and
2. Firefox chews up a fair bit of resources if used when you are on the USB stick - RAM, CPU and so on.

With all those limitations, it's STILL running better than Windows. I can say that I wouldn't have the lag time switching tabs, but the streaming has been completely uninterrupted. And the picture quality is amazing. I guess I'll be totally blown away when I get the full install.

Tell us about the specs later after you have installed 21.3

I can give you a command to put in the terminal that will tell all there is to know.

I can believe it (but you did not hear me say that, lol)

I'll leave you in Brian's capable hands for a bit - I run 83 Linux or so, and I have "babies" to tend to

""A DOD wipe takes something like 12 hours""
I noticed this some way back.
Regardless of what is on the drive, vista, win 8 whatever !.....DO NOT go to the trouble of doing a DOD.

Totally unnecessary.

When you install LM21.3, the installer WILL wipe the drive and format it to the required file system, all at the same time.

I am pretty sure I screwd up post numbers before, so pay no attention to that....i think i said post 39....forget it.

If Wiz is conjuring up pics of the install, follow that. What pics he posts will basically show what Bob posted up above at post#41,
....with some extra detail of course.

When you are feeling wealthy enough, buy yourself a SSD (Solid State Drive. They are much cheaper than they used to be....and are as easy as pie to install.
The difference in speed will likely amaze you.

That limitation could be as a result of a few things. I have lost touch with which pc you are running the moment....and how much ram it has, etc.....I have no idea of its specs...is it running more than one news service....and playing sound/video at the same time?...your internet connection will also play a part.
The lag time kept me from seeing this. I switched off the news, lag won't be a problem.

I was just watching one news service.

I really don't know what the specs are on this, the Lenovo.

As for the internet connection,

I first should tell you I'm WAY OUT IN THE COUNTRY. I have two options for internet services. Satellite or a cell phone. I was paying $110 a month for 10GB. I use a phone that is ONLY used for internet.

This cell phone service is the best thing that ever happened. It's cheap, I have truly unlimited data, and the connection is tons better than satellite. When I lived in the city, I had DSL. This phone connection is even better than that was.

So considering all of this, an old Lenovo laptop, way out in the country using a cell phone for internet, running Linux Live from a USB drive, working on RAM only, I'm not using any of the the software that make my connection faster or making a single tweak...

It's STILL performing better than Windows.

This combination

I won't be using this, the Lenovo when I do the full install. It will be on the ASUS. I think I posted the specs in another thread. Let me look....

I'm signing off for the night. Gotta get sleep now!
Thanks for everything!

omg....that will go like the wind !!

Relax....all is well !!

any i7 processor with 12gb of ram will fly

my pc has a seriously old i7-7700 ....it also runs 32GB of ram.....and it is faster than my eyes.

@STaylor

"BEFORE INSTALLING Linux AT ALL, I downloaded Linux updates believing it would update the ISO. I was really excited about that. I couldn't believe it was that easy! I downloaded and "applied" updates. Then I found out it can't be done that way."

The Mint live session runs in Volatile memory...meaning...Volatile memory requires power to maintain the stored information; it retains its contents while powered on but when the power is interrupted, the stored data is quickly lost.

This might explain it...

Have you got Mint installed yet ?

When you do...there are a few things you should do...the first thing is to write down your user password some where safe so you wont forget it...a notebook maybe and the rest later.

Just an administrative note - I have combined the thread that was in Off Topic with this one and deleted the Off Topic one.

Hopefully it simplifies matters.

Just saw this. Thanks!
I thought about adding onto the first one, but then thought maybe it was better to put it in a separate thread.
That's why you're an administrator and I'm NOT! :)

Until you have it installed and running, probably better to stick to this one thread.

Following that you will no doubt have questions about different aspects of the OS, and they can have their own topic ?

The question is:....Do you have it installed?

Updating my probable date for a full install.

I started working again yesterday. I'm a substitute teacher (for now, on the side eventually). The kids in my class really wore me out yesterday and today! I like my job and the kids, but they can be a lot of work! While I wasn't working I stayed up a lot later than usual. Getting to sleep earlier didn't happen so I was already pretty tired anyway.

Yesterday I got home around 5pm. I sat down in my living room and woke up this morning with 1/2 an uneaten cookie in my hand 30 minutes before I had to leave. Unlike men, most women CANNOT get dressed in 30 minutes! I had to recycle the makeup. The mascara and eye shadow on my left eye got rubbed off during the night. I opted to make my coffee instead of fixing the eye shadow. I keep a tube of mascara in my bag. I used it, but the kids still noticed!

Last year was worse. After the first day back at school, I sat down in the living room with a peanut butter sandwich. I woke up in the morning, sandwich in my hand and drool all over my shirt.

So needless to say, I'm TIRED! The last thing I want to do is fall asleep with my PC in pieces. Cat's like playing with cables. Any box that comes into the house is by default the property of the cats. They will MAKE themselves fit into a box 10 sizes too small. My tower would be no problem. They might decide to cuddle up or shove themselves in the space between the heat sink fan and PSU. No, there's no "might decide" about it. They WILL curl up in the tower. Fur will be everywhere! I would be lucky if that were the worst. BTW I keep an air purifier next to the tower. Helps keep the dust and fur out of it.

I'm going to go to bed early tonight!

After I mop, I plan to start on my PC. I don't have a lot to do, but you never know what might happen. And the floor MUST BE MOPPED! The rest of the house can be a mess, but I can't deal with dirty floors. It's been raining here. My cat's have a secret way in and out of the house and bring a lot of dirt in on the feet. When it rains, they bring in wet dirt, not quite mud but bad enough. I have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large kitchen/dining room and a huge living room to mop. I have no carpet, plus I live in the country. DUST!

I should probably have everything ready in time to do a full install tomorrow night. If I'm not, it's because I had to wrestle with kids in the last 2 periods for my brain. I got all of it back, but it's still settling itself back into place.

And by the way, I was telling someone how much I like Linux. He's a Windows guy. Like me he tears them apart, has lot's PC laying around, pokes around under the hood of Windows. He looked totally lost, like he was thinking, "What's wrong with Windows?" ! I feel like I'm about to part of a secret society that the outside world just doesn't understand!
