HP Notebook 15 which Linux for me?

are they referred to in a box as "registries" i did not see any box called helper support apps or apps.

Just a minute... I'll try to install in Windows 10 to see if its different than 7.

No, I don't know what you mean by "registries". These helper apps come up during the install process, just a small little window.

no such small window came up. i shall uninstall and then try again and send a screenshot of what i am offered to do by the installation wizard.

i have windows 8

I get the same thing in Windows 7 and 10.... your version 8 should be no different. Here is a screenshot of the first helper app (Universal Serial Bus) while the VirtualBox install window is behind it. You can see that it is asking to install his helper app. With that checkbox ticked (Always trust software from Oracle).... I think it will install the other two apps without prompting. But I think you should have seen this during the VirtualBox install. I tried uninstalling from Win 10, and it didn't come back to this prompt, so I am guessing that they were not removed when I uninstalled it.

this is the new version of virtualbox (copied from the link) VirtualBox-5.2.4-119785-Win.exe

right at the beginning before the boxes there is something called Custom setup where it says to mark icons to decide. there are support options there. it is difficult to know how to get them all.

installed again but still no support apps so i have uninstalled again.

when next i start installing i shall do printscreen so you can see the alternatives i have.

this is what i get. what do i choose? sorry. can find no way to zoom.

There is no need to do a custom setup. Accept the defaults. If you don't get the prompt to install the extra apps ("helper" was my term, not theirs)... then forget about it. You either did, or you didn't, but if you don't see what I described to you then you may have missed your chance. If so, we either have to hope that we don't really need them, or that we can install them later when they are needed. I'm not an expert with VirtualBox.... so my assumption was that they will be needed by most people, and that's why the popups appeared to prompt to install them.

Just click next. Accept the defaults. The prompt for the extra apps comes later after this, if it will show you now.

the default is with the 3 it seems. here is the next problem. which to select?

continue later. it is now past 3 a.m. so must sleep.

Accept ALL DEFAULTS. There is nothing you need to change.... except to tell it to install those 3 apps, if they come back. The default for those apps is to NOT install, so you needed to be careful through that step.

OK, get some rest. I'll be gone for about 24 hours while I sleep and go to work.

It will probably take you longer to go through those 3 dozen steps than I will have on any given night coming up. So if you proceed, just read them all carefully and try to do as I instructed. In the end, if it fails, we will have to delete the new virtual machine and start over.

Cheers

i did as you said.

present problem:
do i (alternative 1) not i de-select any of the alternatives in what you can see in the image i uploaded called Choices? is that alternative the default?

or do i (alternative 2) de-select all except 1 alternative in what you can see in the image i uploaded called Choices.

i shall install the 3 apps if asked during the other installment but first need to know if i choose alternative 1 or 2 as i have called them above under "present problem".

step 5 done, if default means uncheck nothing then i have chosen default. no prompts for installing 3 help apps have appeared. now i shall continue to step 6. no 64 bit option is given.

step 23 result "This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot. Please choose a kernal appropriate for CPU." I have no idea what that says and no idea what i have done wrong and no idea what the solution is but i suppose it means i cannot do the next step.

What i wonder is why at step 9 there was no Ubuntu 64 bit or x86 option but only 32 bit although the iso file is x86. if the only option made available is Ubuntu 32 bit then surely the iso file should be x32 and not cx86? i hope you understand my totally unscientific English.

redone everything up to step 23. up to step 23 i think i have succeeded but step 24 is impossible for there are no "little blue boxes marked with X in the banners in the top of the window", and step 25 is impossible for there is no Linux Mint icon to double click after or before booting.
after booting a square containing "Welcome to Linux mint 18.3 MATE 32 bit" menu appears at the top of which it says Start Linux Mint. but clicking that or pressing Enter does not start Linux Mint but says you have clicked the mouse inside the VM machine...and there is a box named Capture and one named Cancel. all pressing Capture results in is making it impossible to point anywhere.
what have i done wrong?

Hmmm, this is an unexpected problem. Although you may not understand what is happening, I think I do understand what you're saying.... VirtualBox is not giving you choices for 64-bit almost certainly because your copy of Windows 8 is a 32-bit version. (I have little doubt that your computer is 64-bit, but many manufacturers, like HP, would put the 32-bit Windows on them because it was a little cheaper).

In VirtualBox, your Windows is what is called the "host" system, and everything depends on the capabilities of the host. Because your "host" (Windows 8) is 32-bit... it will not let you install the 64-bit Linux Mint. If you are not running low on hard drive space, I would say not to delete the Mint 64-bit .iso file that you spent so much time downloading though... we may can use it again in another manner (to make a bootable DVD or USB, or to use it for a full installation). You can always delete the file later if you need the space.

By the way, "accepting defaults" means accepting the choices that are already picked for you.... in other words, do not change settings. There was nothing for you to change in the VirtualBox installation except to accept those other apps if they showed up. They probably did show up the first time you installed it, but after that they are not returning. There is nothing further to do about that... we'll just have to wait and see if VirtualBox works okay for you when you get a Linux to install in it.

And right now, we are a long way away from getting Linux to install.... because we got the wrong version (64-bit). If you still want to install Linux Mint in VirtualBox, it will be necessary to again download a huge .iso file.... this time the 32-bit version. And then, you will again want to verify the download like you did before, but you would compare to the 32-bit file that is shown in the checksum text file, sha256.txt. If this is what you want to do, then here is the link to get the 32-bit Linux Mint MATE .iso file (right-click on link and save to your hard drive): http://mirrors.kernel.org/linuxmint/stable/18.3/linuxmint-18.3-mate-32bit.iso The instructions to install the 32-bit Linux Mint will still be the same as with the 64-bit.... except, of course, that you have to make 32-bit choices instead, such as what you saw in Step 9.

I am beginning to wonder if all this might be too much for you though? Or if maybe introducing you to Linux in "another manner" might be better, like I mentioned above? Do you have a DVD drive in your laptop? (And some blank DVDs?) One method is to use that 64-bit Linux Mint that you already downloaded and burn it to DVD a special way so that you can boot your laptop on the DVD and run Linux. Or a USB memory stick can be used instead of a DVD, but it will need another Windows program downloaded to put Linux Mint on the USB stick.

Anyway, these other methods are something for you to think about. Or you can go ahead and download the 32-bit Linux Mint file and we will try again with VirtualBox. Let me know which way you want to go, and I will keep trying to help you get started.

Cheers

as i said i have done everything for the 32-bit iso down to step 23 but cannot start Linux. there are no little blue boxes nor is there any icon to start Linux. i wish it were possible to post a screenprint in reply so you could see what i get instead of what you say i should get. i wonder if it is not due to my having windows8.

now i have 3 "New" in Virtualbox. how do i remove them and all attempts to get Virtualbox from my computer?

my brother gave me some empty dvds but i do not know how to burn to them.

One-by-one, single-click on each of the "New" that you created in VirtualBox so that it is highlighted in blue. Then, for each one, click the "Machine" menu in the top menu bar, then click "Remove". When the next window pops up, you will choose "Delete all files". You definitely want to delete the files because each of the "New" is 15 GB... so they are taking up a lot of space.

To remove VirtualBox, go into Windows Control Panel, and find "Uninstall a program".... find VirtualBox in the list, click on it to highlight it in blue, then click "Uninstall" (somewhere up near the top of the Control Panel screen).

Gotta run.... working day shifts!

Cheers

Hi @Livid just passing through. :)

I don't use Windows and I don't use Virtual Box, so I'll leave those issues to @atanere .

Did you verify your .iso you downloaded? Using that checksum utility atanere described?

If it is Linux Mint 18.3 MATE 32-bit it will be

428d47c5ce54e949b0ba656a2c387d4536b9e0530bcc840784b456190411f11c

If no, please do so, if yes, then in Windows 8:

  1. Open your File Manager, which is Windows Explorer, and proceed to where the .iso was downloaded
  2. Right-click on that file, and see if there is an option something like Windows Disk Image Burner, if so click it.
  3. If the option is not there, repeat step 1, right-click and choose "Properties".
  4. On the General Tab choose "Opens with", change to "Windows Explorer" and click Apply
  5. Then right-click on the .iso and choose Burn Disk Image
Once you get to that option via Step 2 or Step 5, pop open your DVD tray and insert a DVD and close, or if there is only a slot, insert the DVD and push in until it clicks into place, and follow any instructions to burn the disk.

If there is an option on burning speeds, choose the slowest available, it will take longer to burn, but the burn will be better.

Good luck
