I started my computer. Firefox was not opened yet. I pushed the keyboard out of my way and my arm hit the bottom edge of the keyboard. A small window immediately opened up in the middle of the desktop which stated, "find files on desktop".
I've never seen this before. How did I do that and how do I do it again?

What operating system and desktop environment are you using?

We're probably going to need to know your DE.

Ubuntu 24.04. Gnome desktop
You probably hit the space bar while the desktop was showing.

Try that again. Make sure all windows are minimized so only the desktop is showing. Then press the space bar.

I minimized windows and hit spacebar. nothing. So I tried going through the keys. "l" brings up the desktop search window but the window has a "[" in its text box. So you have to clear the box first and then type in a word to search for. You are lucky if you can accomplish clearing the "[" before the desktop search box disappears and then if you hit the "l" again a new widow appears stating "clear selection before starting new search. Then you need to click on the desktop first in order to get the desktop search box to come up when you press "l".
I know this sounds like a lot of cr*p but these are the facts. Anyway, I know what it is now.

Odd behavior. Gnome at least USED to have the feature I described above. Ubuntu had it, Manjaro had it and a few others if memory serves me well. I believe it was in the standard keyboard short cuts in 2022.

Might still be the case. I'd research that if I were you to make things easy and learn in the process. Well, at least you figured it out anyway. Which is a good thing.
