G’day everyone. I’m Mike. Very new to Linux. Kinda new to computers, actually. Build my first PC last year because I wanted to learn about computers and how they run. I started learning Linux a few weeks ago. I’m having a lot of fun learning about it. Yay Linux!

G'day Mike, from another Aussie you already know, and welcome again to linux.org :)

I’m having a lot of fun learning about it.

...and if you have the right mindset, that can continue ad infinitum.

I started using it in 2010, and in 2014 I gave away the other OS, and have used Linux exclusively ever since.

Still enjoying it, still learning about it and from it, and from these fine folk here.

Cheers

Chris

I’d like to give up Windows but need to use Outlook, Word, and Excel for work. I’ve heard about programs like Wine that say they allow you to use Windows programs. What do you think about programs like that?

I have seldom used Wine, maybe once to see if MS Paint would run, I am no expert but we have a number of people here who are.

Best asked in support subforums, either of Getting Started or General Linux Questions, with a clear subject heading.

I think I may not worry about using programs like Wine. I have Windows on a separate drive and I don’t relish the idea of having any of it’s programs on my Linux drive. The arrangement works. And, as they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Depending on the size of your ssd/hdd and amount of ram.......what can sometimes work, is to install a Virtual Machine on your Linux drive etc, and use it to install any 'must have' windows app on that.
Because it is in a virtual machine there is no crossover, afaik.

Just a thought.

and, Welcome to Linux.org ....from yet another Aussie.

Aussies....we are thick as thieves around here !

You can never have enough quality folks! Lol.

I’m happily surprised by the welcome and support I’ve gotten from everyone here. Thanks to one and all!

hehe... I'm not Aussie, but if I were, I think I could be a good one.

Sometimes I watch this news Channel from Aussie, not to be political, but just to see the Aussie news girl reporting news. She so cool and pretty and makes my heart pitter patter. <3
