Hi there
I'm just new to Linux and wanting to download a website design software / builder that is compatible with Linux OS (Mint to be exact) . I'm wondering if anyone is currently using one they can recommend? I've worked with Serif Web Plus and also Wix in the past. Wanting some standalone software on my computer to generate the website, rather than Wix, which has become expensive. Thanks in advance of your suggestions. It's good to be on Linux!

G'day TroyLinux, Welcome to Linux.org

I have zero experience in that are, but I am quite sure there are plenty here who do.

In typing in their user names here, they will be alerted to the presence of this thread. Make due allowance for time differences internationally.

@Scribe1
@GatorsFan
@osprey
@KGIII
@f33dm3bits

There are countless others, be patient.

My website is hosted on Squarespace (around $20-$25 monthly), and I used their website builder. It isn't the easiest to use - but an idiot like me could figure it out. I imagine you're looking for a better tool than that, which would handle advanced Website features and functionality. I haven't tried this yet, but I was someday going to look into using Scribus and Gimp to see what I could do without someone else's tools for the masses. Scribus is an open-source desktop publishing software with features like color management, PDF creation, and XML-based file format. I wish you the best with your project(s), and welcome aboard!

The best tool is probably a plain text editor. Any cheap cPanel account is going to come with a basic website design tool. So, there's that.

If you want to dive into it, look up 'Bluefish'. That's a solid HTML editor.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m looking for a stand alone software that I can upload to a hosting platform.

There are loads of free tools you can use in the repository, but if you are looking for something free and a little more targeted, I have heard fairly good reports on Lunacy https://icons8.com/lunacy

What you get depends on what you are looking to do. I do dot net work so I have a windows VM to work with for that. It makes great server sided websites. If all you want is HTML then the text editor is fine. Gambas is a programming language for linux that has some ability to do web programming so you can check that out but can't guaranty it works for you.

If you can tell us what kind of web programming you are looking at doing I may be able to help better.

Thanks for your question. I am a musician and music teacher I’ve been using Wix but it is expensive. I would like to buy a standalone drag and drop web design software and upload the site HTML etc to a host.

I’m not a big fan of HTML coding and would like to minimise my input in that area. It’s my preference that the software does the coding and to use pre-existing templates and then adjust them for my needs.

Some of the site functions include:
– promoting Music lessons
– CD sales
– events
– sharing contact details and promoting services.
– most of the above I can have external providers such as event- Bright (events) or Apple Music as platforms to sell event spaces and music downloads and just drop a widget into the site. So I don’t need the web design software to be able to do everything. I hope that helps, please let me know if you want more information. Thanks again.

BlueGriffon and Komodo Edit, are ones you can look at however if it is just straight HTML you can use chapGPT or most any other AI to create the code. Then use filezilla to upload it to your host.

Thanks for those suggestions. I really don’t want to do any HTML. I’d rather just do a drag & drop and treat it like a desktop publisher and work on the aesthetic design and structure levels only.

those 2 are supposed to be GUI drag drop. you will have to try them. or if your distro has a software repo you can search it.

Hi APTI, Thanks for your question. I'm designing a music teaching website with option to download music files / albums and a few different services. I've been using WIX, however wanting to use standalone software now and upload to a host myself. I would prefer the software was on my PC rather than web based stuff. Drag and drop and minimal or no HTML coding would be preferable.
