I am on holiday at the moment in deepest darkest Kernow, the holiday park we are on unusually doesn't provide Internet connections themselves but, it is provided by a third party. the charge is £5 per 24 hrs, and the connection is lousy, once you do get connected you then have to jump through hoops to get sites to load, from please enable DRM [which already is] oops we hit a problem, and the like, so I conclude these problems are caused by my linux security settings, for those who have been moaning about one extra step to log in, this is what it took me, open Firefox, click on Linux org link, [oops sorry we have a problem ,check the address is correct] click on reload, and get cloud flair login tick i am human and [get sorry unable to connect please reload page] click on box reload and I'm in, some other sites I have on one click links I still cannot get into

SO the question of the day would you
1] say sod it and put up with it
2] consider lowering your security settings for selected sites to make things easier
3]deactivate all your security settings to save having the problem

I would buy one of the sim cards with lots of GB data (depending on what you want to do) and if you use PC or tablet, do the hotspot connection. I would defo not rely on the third party wifi. There must be some mobile internet coverage, albeit not perfect, in line what imperfect connection you have with the third party AND security concerns.

In the worst case scenario - get a book, crosswords, sudoku... origami is also fun to do :D In the meantime, use your electronic device for a sound background, if you have stuff downloaded. There was life before internet, you know. Just look back :).

Find another holiday Park.....either that or ditch the 'net for however long you are there.....it sounds like it is more frustration than its worth.
I read books from my phone....have been doing so for many , many years. If the book is good, I can read until i nod off.

If you're on vacation then enjoy the vacation spot where you're at.

I'd use my smartphone or wait until I get back home.

When the Wife and I go out of town we just use our cell phones if we need to internet.

To hell with dragging a computer or tablet along with you on a trip.

This. Normally when I'm on vacation I only take along my phone, that way I can still check some online stuff while still focused on my vacation.

Yesterday went down to the reception/clubhouse where they have free wi-fi from the same provider, this is obviously on a different system/different network settings as my laptop worked perfectly fast and no connection problems, talking to a few people it seems they don't often see people with laptops any more, most use their smartphones or tablets so being in the UK they mainly have android devices a few chrome and a smattering of apple, I don't know how good the security is on these [only what I have read] now me being a long time Linux man I stick to what I call standard practice, no AV, and the standard inbuilt fire wall which is obviously better as it is this ,that is causing the problem, I tried changing the settings from public [strict] to Home [the lowest setting] and it is still giving the same problems. so its defiantly Netfilter firewall 6 isp 0

I don't have , won't have, don't want a smartphone [ours has the 3310 chipset]
I don't care for smartphones.

Although.

Smartphones are convenient and can make things easier for old farts like me when out and about.

Need to find a location?
I thought I new where it was.

I'll turn on the GPS it will tell me how to get there.

Okay I'm old and I used to know where everything is / was but it ain't that way nowadays.

Truth is our city has changed so much and is changing all of the time.

I don't know where a lot of things are nowadays on a count of all the change.

So yes as much as I dislike what smartphones do they make my life easier in several ways.

Don't get me wrong I tossed mine against the wall the other day for P*$$ing me off.

I don't do nothing personal on mine I just call and text and Google and GPS and it's okay.

Gotta move forward with them newfangled ways or be left behind although I don't have to like them.

@Brickwizard
Enjoy your vacation. :)

Those are all personal things. The data collection these days is mind blowing.
I am somewhere in between. I use the phone to play simple games, to take pics, to listen to music, to communicate with others by text or phone, but I find the use of many apps too restrictive, I prefer doing many other activities on a computer or laptop. I even access social media rather via a browser on that phone, not via apps, having a better control over certain things. I decided not to install the fakebook's messenger app, it wanted access to my sms, if I remember it right, years ago. What for? Access denied.

Now Tomtom sent me an email that it cuts support for a sim card in that device. They want me to connect the device to my phone to keep using it. I can as well use the phone itself... not going to buy any other Tomtom device for the foreseeable future. They are running the once great product to the ground.

I'd say that you could phone, if you can reasonably do so.

You could also try grabbing a different browser, say Chrome, and just leave the settings alone. Then, just do what you need to do in that browser. I'd avoid doing things like logging into my bank account...

I use FF, but did try both Chrome and Brave on Monday, made no difference

Huh... Then, I'd suspect that it's not any specific security settings but it MAY BE that your traffic looks unusual to their system.

When you browse the web, you're sending out some information which identifies you as using Linux and a specific browser version (among other things).

Hmm... I wonder if it'd help to use some sort of 'user-agent' switcher to make it look as though you're using current Windows.

I'd test with other sites first, as that's something Cloudflare might pick up on and then give you the boot. Spoofing your user-agent is pretty easy with browser extensions. It's not going to fool deep packet inspection but it'll fool some more superficial scanners.

David, dont go to any trouble, I don't do anything too sensitive when on holiday, it is just an annoyance that I have never had before, all the years of using Linux and travelling around UK and Europe it's never hapend before,

Alrighty. I won't invest any more time/effort. If it was me, I'd spend a silly amount of time trying different things and then I'd just give up and accept it so that I could enjoy my holiday. It sounds like that's close to what you've chosen to do, and I don't blame you.

Sometimes, the internet and computer activities can be set aside for a while.

I haven't taken an extended vacation in a while. There's not a lot motivating me to do so right now. I can use my own computers here as a VPN and then take small vacations where nobody online actually notices. I may have done that a few times. Those would be days where I didn't post much and only logged in sporadically - long enough to rush through any pressing moderation issues. I've also been known to do that while the missus drives.

Enjoy your vacation. Consider it 'doctor's advice'. Eat well, eat different, and try new things.

Poor choice of words or phrasing.

When I say I do nothing personal I'm meaning as far as banking or credit card purchases etc.

Looking for locations or calling or texting or Googling tells no one about me or who I am.

They follow your whereabouts and profile you.
In my previous work we were forbidden to put into google home post codes of our clients, exactly because those are also pieces of jigsaw for personal identification. We were instructed to put the post code of the village or town for calculating their travel expenses.

I would love to, we are in Kernow, home of the traditional Cornish pasty [which i love if they are batched not factory made] BUT I am not allowed, I am on a restricted carb diet so limit my daily intake, and Pasties are mainly pastry and potatoes, I walk past the village bakery and drool at the smell

restricted carb diet

I would not like that very much. Fortunately, at this moment in time, my diet is unrestricted. Though, I do not eat to excess. I've got to maintain my girlish figure, after all. (Actually, it's just that I don't want to be overweight.)

Ha I love this place. No where else have I seen people who hate smart phones.

I went from having a smart phone for a few years to switching to a dumb (flip) phone and then doing something crazy recently after realizing that the new dumb phones were becoming smart. I paid $20.00 to transfer my phone number to google voice, bought a chromebook for under $30.00, installed Linux on it, and use it as my phone. Thanks to Linux I have been able to get rid of my phone along with the bill and will never have to buy another phone again. I can add these to my list of things I have been able to free myself from with Linux.
