I often wonder that as well.
However.....when you are new to Linux it can be overwhelming. Not being familiar with certain terms and the meanings ie:) BIOS, NIC, Bootable .iso and the like.

I’m doing my best, there’s too much stuff to read

When I install Linux Mint Cinnamon and get it the way I like...I'll create an image of it with both Foxclone and Timeshift (not on the same Drive).

Should anything happen...it's simple to put the image or Timeshift snapshot back on the Drive with nothing lost...the only time I need to do a clean install is when I move from 21.1 to 22.1 in two years time.

Does Linux Mint have a factory reset? There wasn’t anything important on the laptop and I just want to be able to use it again…

It’s an iPhone 6s Plus
You might be able to download Linux Mint to your iphone.
Do you have a cable to connect the phone to your HP?

A factory reset you ask?
With Linux Mint that would be Timeshift. However I recall you saying you weren't sure what Timeshift is and it wasn't installed.
OR> create a new user but then there is the network manager that didn't get re-installed.

You can 'factory reset' that HP Notebook most likely in the BIOS friend.:)

Be back I'm looking up the specs on your iphone-

Thanks :) Would a usb cable work?

Ok your iphone has 128
Thanks :) Would a usb cable work?
Yes. As long as it fits into the iphones usb port.
*Try the charging cable that you use to charge your phone.

My charger for my phone has an 2 prong plug at the end.
When I need the usb part I pull apart the 2 prong plug and it's off to the races.
See pics attached-

No.

It means that you can download Linux Mint 22 to your phone.
Then you can install Linux on the machine that was given to you.

Use the usb cable connected to your iphone and transfer it to your machine.
Once the ipone is connected to your machine move the the Linux Mint download .iso to the laptop.

Do you have a usb thumb drive or a CD/DVD?

Let me know when you are sure.

In the meantime I'll see if Apple has a app to transfer the .iso of Mint to your laptop.

Have you by chance tried Recovery Mode?

Found a few ways to transfer files from your iphone to your pc.

I think my phone is too old, both articles say I need the latest version of the phone

I have not, what is that?
Recovery Mode is where you can make Linux boot so you can fix things.

In the screenshot/example below you'll see where Ubuntu is listed for "Recovery Mode"
