Windows 11 and secure boot with Ubuntu

I could not get Ubuntu to boot with secure boot enabled in bios
Windows 11 is on SSD by itself Ubuntu on another drive
What I did was ti use rufus and set Rufus partition scheme as GPT
and target system as BIOS or UEFI
Worked okay so far, been told will only work until a update then it will not

Half true,
It will work for as long as Windows update doesn't modify boot loader.

When that happens you'll need to update grub because ubuntu won't be bootable.

yes it is true that many Windows security updates can break your Linux grub, but the many other updates won't]

its a quick process, you force Linux to start [usually using the short boot menu,] open a terminal and for Debian based distributions run sudo update-grub

An alternative, which is what I used to do, is to:

1. Disable bitlocker in Windows
2. install Linux, and write GRUB only in the Linux drive,
3. Set up the Linux drive as the first bootloader in UEFI's boot priorities,
4. Ensure that both Linux and Windows boot from GRUB,
5. Enable bitlocker in Windows
6. Jot down that recovery key

That way, when windows gets an update that fiddles with its bootloader, instead of losing momentarily your Linux access, you'll only have to input the Windows unlock key once until the next update that breaks it again.

It messes with its own bootloader.

Windows' bootloader detects who in the chain was first (GRUB) and as this is not expected at Redmond when they code their bootloader, it will ask you once (most cases) for the recovery key.

Then it'll assume it's intentional and go on with its life until next bootloader's update.

not sure if you are using a desktop or laptop. If you are on a desktop the answer is super simple. I detail it in this post.

One thing many people do is make systems that will boot more than one choice of operating systems. This little article is a new and better way to do this. Often we have to fix the multi boot systems because an update changed something and damaged our grub configuration. Windows is especially good at doing this. So here is the best way to do this that allows you do make a multiboot system without having to do anything to grub or play with configurations.

This can only be done in a system that can accept more than one drive and an expansion card.

windows loves to screw with boot loaders. and don't even start me on bitlocker. I would go into windows and remove bitlocker from your drive. then disable it in services. If you have a desktop my above solution is solid and I wish more people knew about it. Laptop you are out of luck.

good advice except some things will not work in a VM, such as 3d graphic is not well supported in all VM. Not to mention a VM does need enough resources to run the host system and the virtual system. Not everybody has that power.

Yes this is true...Mint Cinnamon 22.2 froze twice and with video memory set to 256mb (max) and 6GB of Ram...while other Distros run well.

Here is what I did, removed all SSD's except the one that to be used for Ubuntu
Used USB with Ubuntu Live, booted with the USB
Installed Ubuntu on the only SSD in pc
Installed the other SSD's back in the pc
I use F12 key to pick which OS I want to boot to (default is Win 11)
So far no issues at all
