I am getting ready to finish getting my Acer server so it runs the OS off the pci e card I installed and get that working correctly. I am looking to get a linux server solution to give me the features OneDrive gives me like access to my files anywhere, automatically back up photos and files I use on my phones, tablets etc. Is there anything out there like that? Who am I kidding it's linux, there is something out there like that!

I have heard of that before. Do I need to use it with other software like TrueNAS? or can I just run Nextcloud as an OS?

So I don't have to use TrueNAS as my network storage OS? is there something better? or is that the gold standard for setting up easy server storage and then run NextCloud on it for remote access?

You don't have to use TrueNas to use Nextcloud, you can use any Linux distribution that you want.

Perfect. Thanks. I will probably use TrueNAS as it's what I am looking for for that system. Should be easier to setup for my needs!

Thanks again. i love the Linux community here! Great information provided always!

Me again. Ha ha. I have been back and forth because I never found a distro that I could use until now. PearOS seems to be the winner for me. Now, for NAS system for my home and business (based in house). I know you said I can use anything I want. That's great advice, but is there anything I should look for? I am doing creative workflows, property management and inspections and marketing.

I want a system that can easily share data and files between our household devices, both in house and remotely while we are on location shooting, or away on vacation. I also want it to be secure.

Some ideas and suggestions would be a great help on this. Somewhere I could go read and look. TrueNas was suggested awhile ago for the NAS, and Nextcloud for remote access. But any other easier systems would be interesting as well. I am really done with the bigg machine that is windows and MS. they were close to effing me over with my MS accounts and I almost lost all our data. I got the payment made and and now I am getting my server up and running ASAP to get all our data off onedrive and onto our own hosted server.

Once I figure out what I am using then I will need a "personal vault" area created for certain projects I don't want our sons to see.

I've never heard of PearOS, I'll have to check it out. What do you like about that distribution compared to others you have tried? I'm not sure what your question is, but most import thing is probably that the distribution is able to have a recent version of php

PearOS is a linux distro that resembles MacOS. It's just polished looking compared to Zorin, Mint and others. Garuda would have been a winner but it was mainly terminal driven and I didn't want that.

As for the server / NAS, what I am asking is there any distros you recommend for that purpose for ease of set up? TrueNAS is one that is spoken about, are there any others that are mainly for this use or can be configured easily. I am a newb to the Linux world, but MS has pissed me off so much I am done.

I don't k'now what you find ease of use. For a server, I find ease of use Debian but you may find something else more easy to use, ie: TrueNAS. No idea what you are looking for?

I see there have been answers before mine but I still gotta ask: if it's a server and you own it, why does it have to be "software" to upload things on the server? Can't you just use Filezilla like any normal server owner?

I am assuming I cannot access my server remotely without some type of software to safely do so.

I personally started with Nextcloud before later migrating to Seafile which I felt better suited my needs.

Nextcloud is very handy as a collaborative platform, but I felt Seafile better fit my needs for Cloud storage and it feels like a more specialized utility to serve that purpose.
