Quick question: Is there a video player the lets you vary the playback speed; play it faster or slower like some YouTube videos? I love VLC but it doesnt seem to offer that option.

VLC certainly does. Look under the 'Playback' menu.....the 'Speed' option is greyed-out unless you're actually playing something.
You can also customise the GUI to add lots of different option "buttons" to the control bar:-

As seen above, I've added the GUI speed controls to the right-hand side of my VLC's lower control bar. You can add these via Tools -> Customise interface...
The entire process is drag'n'drop. Don't forget to add appropriate spacers, etc, to make things "sit" correctly.
Most buttons will let you add a 'large' version if you want to make a particular option more prominent.
