Very good article. Felt like, with my lack of expertise, it was written just for me! I had no idea there was a way to "reinstall" without removing first. I doubt it'll help with the issue I'm having with Thunderbird. But I'm gonna give it a go.

My Thunderbird is heavily used and is running okay.

You can try it. You can also purge and try Thunderbird anew, with a clean configuration.

sudo apt purge thunderbird
 
You could also use Synaptic Package Manager

Right click on the offending software and 'mark for reinstallation'
 
@truckerDave, there are many people use Thunderbird here

if the problem persists, open a topic and we will see what can be done.....although, a reinstall should fix the vast majority of dramas...(has Thunderbird updated fully ?)
 
Another handy to know article...If I reinstall anything I just type... sudo atp install package name but that's me.
