Terms and rules page updated: Our stance on AI-generated posts and replies.

Hey there - just updated the site-wide Terms and rules page with:

AI-generated posts and replies MUST be clearly disclosed. If AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) were used to write any portion of your post, include a note such as 'AI-assisted' or 'Generated with AI' in your message.

AI-generated content (to me) makes you look like a potential spammer building up content to get past the various checks the forum software has in order to post links and what not.

There really is no place on here to use AI to generate a post or reply unless you're using it for more clarity in your wording (that you came up with). I use it all of the time personally to check scripts i've written.. get suggestions/fixes, etc..

Main thing - if you used AI, disclose it. We're here for human interaction.

I need to be honest, I sometimes use it to check grammar. Only so everyone understands what I mean sometimes, but I never copy straight from AI. I try to use my own brain too

AI is also good at translating text. As it 'understands' context, note the quotes, it is able to be more accurate than many of the existing translation tools.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, using AI without disclosing it is akin to plagiarism. You're presenting the work as though it was done by you.

Also, if we get outside of our bubble, and if the numbers are to be believed, a whole lot of people are happily using AI these days.

At some point, it's likely to become less easily spotted.

At the moment it is easily spotted, but may get harder as it has more 'practise'

The plagiarism involved is real....some people attempt (unsuccessfully) to hide behind it....to pass off what has been written as their own thoughts/knowledge/
Having a rule in place that the presence of AI content must be disclosed is mandatory.

The application of knowledge related to Linux is sometimes not as simple as it would appear, ....there are many nuances to be taken into account, and I believe that only the human brain can succeed in many cases. The approach/mindset of the person asking the question, cannot be understood by ai, but it can be 'picked up on' by a human being

Oh definitely .. I use AI all the time. I'll use Chatgpt for mostly regular questions/info .. "how long to air fry gortons fish filets" (lol) .. or brainstorming ideas. I use Claude to go over scripts / script ideas I'm working on. Saves tons of time.

However, if i'm helping someone with something, i'd go off docs or my own knowledge.

The reason I don't like it is being a screen scraper and aggregator, it cannot think Laterally as humans can, "my ATI graphics card won't work in Mint it was ok in windows" may not be a driver problem but one of maintenance, we ask further questions, i could transpire the poster has changed/added an HDD, in doing so, dislodged the cards connections

For myself I use Perplexity a lot because it also shares where it got the information from and recently I found I came across ollama which can utilize your Nvidia gpu for the language models you have pulled and selected within your local AI assistent.
