[Solved] Sound stopped working.

I have MX-23.2 Linux Xfce and before I shut my computer down everything was working fine. I made no changes. Ever since then when I booted up my computer the sound doesn't work anymore. How do I fix this?

Was there a kernel update ?

Check in History of Updates. I am assuming MX23 has this facility

No, there was no kernel update. I even tried booting with the previous kernel and still no sound.
 
open Terminal

ctrl+alt+T

or....click on menu, and type in terminal

When terminal is open, type or copy and paste in :

When alsamixer is opened, then you can:

press F1 key for help to see all the options you can use,
press Esc key to return to volume bars,
press F5 to see all volume bars,
raise the volumes by using the up arrow key, and move from bar to bar with the left and right arrow keys.
press Esc to quit alsamixer when you're finished.

Thank you, but I find that to be impossible to use.

if you type alsamixer .........into the terminal, and click on enter It will look like this....

You will see a light green bar...vertical.....that indicates volume

At the bottom of that light green bar....there two zeroes.... 00.

If one of them shows as an MM .......that means the sound is OFF

Use the arrow keys to move across and back the pic.....and stop on the one (or more) that have the MM showing.

Then simply tap the m key on your keyboard.....and the MM will instantly change to a 00.....which means you have successfully turned sound ON

It doesn't respond to my keyboard. I posted what it shows.
 
Ok......understood.
I will think of another way.
 
I fixed it for now. The speakers that I purchased about a month ago failed. The only way to fix this problem permanently is by firing squad.
 
That's an effective fix !...however can you plug them into something else?...is there some way to prove their failure before you return them etc......Just for your own peace of mind.?

I can prove it by plugging in my old speakers and they worked which is what I did. These new Creative Labs speakers sounded nice when they worked but are complete garbage because they only lasted 1 month. Where they are made tells it all on why they broke as they are the lowest quality garbage.

That's a problem because Microcenter is 87 miles away and with tolls it's an expensive trip that might not be worth it.

I found out that these stupid speakers have a factory reset. They have 3 buttons on the front, 1 is the volume, 2 is for surround sound, and 3 I don't know what it's for. They supposedly have software in them which is asinine. After doing the reset it still didn't work. Then I played around with the buttons and all of a sudden they started working. They are Creative Labs 60T speakers. What doesn't make sense is I have an APC 1500 back up power supply which I have them connected to. It was windy here and the incompetent idiots from Pennsylvania Power and Light had a power failure. I shut everything down softly after the power went out. These speakers were engineered by blithering idiots because this shouldn't happen by turning off the electricity. I find it highly annoying that just about everything in the 21st Century has to be unnecessary over-complicated nonsense.
