Quick Question?

Chromium, the base which many web browsers are made upon today. Is it safe? Is it ok to use it to play with it? or start web development at least? because as far as I think (I'm not an expert on web browsers, I admit), but I think that the safest web browser out there that's made with chromium is ' Google Chrome '. But if I install Chromium on my gnu/linux machine will it compromise my computer as it might not receive the same protection and also software and security updates to keep me safe when browsing the net?

I'm curious about this.

From what I understand, Chromium should be fine, if not more private than regular chrome. Most of it is the same except I think they took the main "Google" Integration out of it. (Paraphrased somewhat with help of AI.)

Otherwise, It's pretty much the Opensource backend of Chrome.

give vivaldi a try it's based on chromium but has more security. and works pretty good also.

I like Ungoogled Chromium for those times when I just have to. It's on Github, works well with Mint Xfce.

If you are going to start web development. do yourself and all of us a favor and try to stick to server sided design. It ensures an even and consistent experience for users of all browsers regardless of what they are. When you go client side like most do, you distribute the work load nicely but you now run into browser issues. Having to write and design to various browsers and that is why so many web sites work better on certain browsers.
Server sided design is a superior and more consistent way. I write server sided and if you look at my web sites they render the same no matter what browser you use.

Chrome is not a 'safe' web browser. In terms of your data etc etc being safe it could not be further from it.
It is owned operated and controlled by google. Why would it be safe.

No modern browser is going to compromise your computer in and of itself. These days, they're even 'sandboxed', meaning that it's not all that easy to have an exploit that exits the browser's memory space. Just make sure that you get it from the official source, and you'll be fine.

There are also many browsers based on Chromium. There are many to pick from.

Something about a Chrome warning hosted on YT made me giggle.

Google was a really cool company a long time ago. I was a happy evangelist for years, even got to beta test the Cr48 (chromebook prototype). But I've spent the last five years or so trying to get as far away as possible. I still get email messages warning they're going to close accounts that I requested be deleted years ago. They send them to my wife's gmail account too.

I download YT videos first and watch them with celluloid.

edit: for clarification, they're sending messages to a paid Proton account saying they're going to close that Proton account. Well shucks.

Treat everything, hardware/software/services/people as if it were already compromised or soon will be. Plan accordingly.
