Hi all. I have tried everything I can look up. I am having a problem with playing and opening some Blu-ray discs. I cannot play any Blu-ray discs in VLC or any other player. Also Makemkv will open some of my Blu-rays but not all. What am I missing? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If using Ubuntu or any of the other buntus you will need to install libdvd-pkg. The file libdvdcss2 sorts the encryption problem,

You will need to search for the file libdvdcss2 to play DVDs on VLC.

To rip blurays on MakeMKV you need to fork out for the registered version, the free version only rips regular DVD disks.

Like I said Makemkv will rip some of my Blu-ray discs but not all. I don't understand that.

What do I need to do to play DVD's and Blu-rays?

What part of my post are you not getting???????? I have stated that MakeMKV will rip some of my Blu-rays but not all of them. I would like to know what I need to do to get it to rip all of them???????

I don't have a Blu-Ray burner but I copy my DVD's with Handbrake...https://handbrake.fr which they say will copy Blu-Ray Disks...it might be worth a try.

I think some disks have separate DVD and Bluray layers. The DVD layers can be ripped separately. I'm no expert, but that's my understanding.

For burned and homemade Blu-rays that come without any copy protection, you can directly play them without any problem. But for commercial Blu-rays which employ several DRM mechanisms such as AACS and BD+, VLC requires the decryption key data base and AACS dynamic library to play these encrypted Blu-ray discs.

Go here to get the required key files and follow the instructions

As far as MakeMKV is concerned some factory Blu-rays have what is called "Playlist Obfuscation" which is a form of copy protection based on seamless branching. The main movie is broken in segmented m2ts files like chapters. They put numerous main movie playlists on the disc, all but one will be fake and arrange the segments in the wrong order - you will have to hunt for the correct file and have MakeMKV use only that file
