I use a laptop with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, and I want to keep the lid closed, but when I'm away and the system sleeps I have to login again in the laptop screen, then the image switches back to the external monitor.

OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) x86_64
Host: OMEN by HP Laptop 15-ce0xx
Kernel: Linux 6.12.63+deb13-amd64
DE: Xfce4 4.20
WM: Xfwm4 (X11)

Thank you.

I'm using an HP laptop in a similar manner and I don't have any issues like that. one thing that may be different is that my system doesn't "sleep" per se, just has a screen blanker, so I may never hit the situation you describe. When I reboot, the grub menu and all the kernel startup messages and such appear on the external monitor. Annoyingly, if I power it down, the (externally accessible) power button won't turn it back on unless I open the lid. On other HP laptops I've used, you just can't reach the power button w/o opening the lid.

Is it important to you that the system be able to go into a full sleep mode? If not (if you're on external power anyway), you can probably disable that.

I assume you do not wish it to sleep ?....Are there Power settings on Debian 13 trixie ?

In linux Mint the setting is : Turn off the screen when inactive for x amount of time or Never.

@wizardfromoz will be along later, he may have the info you need.

Hello, I don't mind if it sleeps and I have to login again, but I'd wish I could do it on the external monitor.
I'm new on Linux and this didn't happened on Windows, well, every once in a while the monitor turn disabled and I have to set it up again.
I'll try changing the sleep times or turn it off to see if I like it.

G'day @destradam , Welcome to linux.org, from another Aussie.

I do not have an external monitor plugged in, so I can't help there.

I do have Debian 13 'Trixie' on board.

If you want to pursue

I'll try changing the sleep times or turn it off to see if I like it.

...you should be able to go to Menu - Settings - Power Management and there will be an option there where you can choose how the system responds to having the lid closed. I usually opt for "switch off screen", but you nay have an option for "do nothing", and so on.

For "sleep" there may be options for Suspend and Hibernation, the latter requires the existence of a Swap partition or swap file. I don't know how they may or may not affect an external monitor.

Let us know how you go.

Cheers
