KERNEL PANIC screen after trying software update -- any suggestions and help?

Seems I fixed it again :-). Wifi is back, and also can get wired if I plug in an ethernet cable.

Your easiest route is to just keep on using the working kernel until a new kernel comes along that does work with your wireless device.

If you find that it's broken long-term, we can discuss that. At that stage, I'd have you move backwards to get to an LTS version of the kernel, which is a kernel that will be well-maintained for a long time. For example, the 6.1 LTS kernel is supported until December of 2027, which should hold you over until you find a currently working kernel.
