For years I used Linux or Unix as well as Windows at work, and dabbled with Linux at home but my personal systems stayed under the MS Win umbrella believing that there were MS compatible applications supplied I could not live without.
About fourteen years ago my ageing home built PC was running Win 7 and rather than go through a forced decision to adopt Windows 8, I installed Linux Mint Maya.
A few things happened.
The first was my aging PC now ran like a stuck chicken instead of the comparatively pokey Win 7, and crashes were non existent.
The second thing was discovering that the vast majority of applications that I "thought" were indispensable I could duplicate with the canned (or available) distro software.
I should state that I'm not interested in gaming, and no longer need to to write code so my transition was likely less painful than it could have been and others may not have such a smooth transition.
Anyway, the fact that my system was now rock solid, faster, and not obsolete left me a Linux user.
I've since upgraded twice to HP built workstations and the advantage of being able to clone my main system drive (Mint 22.3) with all current updates applied and plug the clone into my older workstation and have it work without a hard stop license violation is a benefit I cannot overstate.
