I hope I'm in the right thread, because I want to share what I've been through for 2 weeks. I have been offline all this time and just today have re-established myself online. Still can't get into yahoo e-mail, but that's another story.
On April 20th, I cancelled my membership to a VPN I've had for a little over a year. I'll hold off on name unless someone says it's okay. I cancelled it because it started dropping off and cutting out without warning. It did not give me a way to restart it by itself. So I would always have to close out every freaking thing I had running, and restart the whole system just to get the VPN restarted after logging back in. I got tired of this and decided to tell them to take a hike. So I then tried to get online, and could not. At this point I thought I had a problem with the modem from Xfinity. So I went to their store. I got a new modem. I hooked it up. Still could not get online. So I went back to Xfinity, and told them I needed a Tech to help figure out why I could not access internet. Two days later, Tech dude came over, and said modum was working. He did not offer any ideas and then left. I called Goodwill which has a Tech department, and told the dude my dilemma. He said bring over. I did. He hooked it up to his connection, and it was online. Suggested I replace eithernet line. I did. Came back home, hooked it up, and still could not get on. So I called Xfinity back and told them I'm still not online. About another 2-3 days later, (because it was the weekend at this point), another tech dude called me and said he is familiar with my building. It is old, and so are the cables in building. So he said he would come by the following day to check connections. He never showed up. At this point I almost wanted to kill myself because I got feeling that no body cares or gives a damn. I felt sick. So after this I called Goodwill tech dude back, and he said he thinks that there may be something messed up with the "DNS Settings". And I mentioned to him that all this happened after I uninstalled the VPN on the 20th. He said to bring system in and he thought he could readjust DNS settings. That took about 10 minutes. Brought system back, hooked it up, and I still could not get connection. He could go online at his desk, but I couldn't. So I called him back stating I'm still offline. He said he believed "the VPN screwed up the DNS settings when I uninstalled it" Something to do with not taking out the VPN DNS, instead taking out mine. My only option at this point, according to the tech dude was to wipe the HD and start over again. So I took it back this past Saturday, he reinstalled Cinnamon(?), I picked it up today (Monday) and I'm back on trying to put things back together. I've never heard of something else affecting DNS settings. I would have never figured it out since I'm not the sharpest pencil in the pack. But that is apparently what happened. For these past 2 weeks, I have been an utter depressive mess. Could not check email, can't check bank statements, listen to music if I'm stressed, or watch videos. Nothing. I can't get into e-mail because all the cookies are gone and Yahoo has no clue it's really me, even after putting in my password. It's asking me to verify though a non-existant e-mail address I can't get into. So I'm screwed there. I have no idea what version of Linux I'm on. Does not seem like Cinnamon-though that's what I told the dude at Goodwill. The interface is totally different. Can't seem to get backgrounds to work as the screen is really bright. The screensaver is totally different and has the clock running with screensaver. Can't figure out how to turn that off. Anyway, I had to share this because I'm wondering if someone unistalled something which screwed up their DNS settings. The biggest mind boggeling thing I've ever encountered. I'm just glad this is finally over with.

That would be correct. Was this airvpn, by any chance ? It is quite ok to name them.

Glad you could get it off your chest and that it's working for you again.
find the enjoyment in using Linux.

And we have a winner!!!! You are absolutely correct. It was Air VPN. I'm impressed someone would know. Having this screw up my DNS settings, and having to go through all this aggravation of getting the system set up again (after HD was wiped clean and reformatted), still depresses me. Trying to get printer reinstalled, and it's not on list. And I think this may be the same version of Cinnamon that you have listed because original that I had was 21.1. I do not recommend Air VPN to anyone. I will ask for suggestions on that, but after I get printer and other stuff adjusted properly.

air vpn has a system whereby they use the default firewall settings to block incoming traffic. It is very effective....But....if it screws up, it is a right royal pita.
I have experienced the same problem myself. It can be fixed without reinstalling, but it presents a challenge.

Anyway, at least you are over that, and slowly making headway with your re setup.

Just to be clear....you have downloaded Linux Mint 22.1 now ?

Advertisements have shifted views, which is as nicely as I can think of to point at it, but most people don't really need a VPN.

All it does is make your IP address different, making you appear as though you're in a different location.

This can be useful. This can be invaluable, even. But, unless you have a specific need for a VPN, you can save your money.

Also, be sure to cancel your subscription with the previous VPN provider. If you paid for services in advance, as many do, you might even get a pro-rated refund. In my jurisdiction, I could insist on such.

I didn't download it. The tech dude did all the work. He cleaned HD and reinstalled everything. I do know it's not 21.1 because that was the version before this all happened. Just guessing which it is.

If you click on menu, type in Welcome Screen......clik on it to open it......the version etc of Linux will be in the bottom right hand corner

or

Click on menu, type in System Info clock on that to open it......the information you need will be there. You can click on the Copy toi Clipboard down the bottom (single left click) and then Paste the info here

It says I'm on Linux Mint 22.1
Cinnamon 64 bit
Almost put "Conair". That was a good movie.

Glad you are getting it all sorted out. Mint 22.1 is a good release and once you get everything setup it will run fine for you for along time. As for VPN's there are some goodones out there. I use proton here from time to time and never had the problems you have had. But you need to decide if you really need a VPN as all they really do is stop someone from tracking your location. With my server they take care of that anyway as their nearest site to my actual sight is a number of mile away. Good Luck going forward.
