HP laptop - "Boot Device Not Found" after freeze (Debian 12)

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, my HP laptop will no longer boot.
It was running Debian 12 without any recent changes that I'm aware of. Yesterday, the system froze while I was switching between applications. Since it was completely unresponsive, I held the power button to force it to shut down.

After that, every time I power it on, I get the following message:

Boot Device Not Found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

I also ran the HP hardware diagnostics, and the Storage Test reports "No hard disk found."

The laptop is about 9 years old and uses an SSD. I have important files on it, so I would like to recover the data if possible and would prefer not to reinstall the operating system until I understand what has happened.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Do you think this is more likely to be a failed SSD, a loose connection, or something else? What would you recommend as the next steps to maximize the chances of recovering the data?

Sounds like unrecoverable hardware error. SSD could be finished (most likely), or there's something with motherboard or SATA connection cable (less likely).
Remove SSD from the laptop, and connect it to another computer, check if's even detected.

Thank you for your advice. Does it mean that, the data are not recoverable?

Thank you very much for our suggestion, it was listed below not as a first one. I set it as a first but again does not work.

I had the same problem with an hp prodesk [basically a laptop in a box] it threw a wobbly ad changed the boot order, i managed to boot using the boot menu key an the re-install grub from within Linux

i f that doesn't work open full menu go to drives and check the UEFI settings
