They're both identical, what is the supposed difference?

They both use the same Gnome Desktop - there are a few modifications done by System 76 for Pop OS and Pop OS is based on Ubuntu - this is why there are a few minor differences in appearance - but Pop OS is built for System 76 machines and generally not for others, although you can install it on non-System76 computers (ie Dell, HP, or whatever) it may not run as efficiently as Ubuntu - so if you want Ubuntu then install Ubuntu
Don't get me wrong Pop OS is a good OS but it is designed for System76 machines

Where did you get that idea? I got PoP and its running better than Ubuntu, Arch or anything else I might throw at it.

Up to fairly recently, pop was not even available unless you own a system 75 business machine, it is now and always was constructed by and for system 76 and tuned to the parts used in their own machines, it is not a full Ubuntu build, if it works on your kit out of the box it is a reasonably good distribution [but nothing special], if it doesn't then it is a pain in the derrière, why do you think so many people have problems with it, and why after a rapid rise on distro watch it is now tumbling down the ratings.

I wish I would know about the problems you're talking about, but I simply don't have them. The worst I've had it so far was that the distro was a bit jerky after updating thus I had to restart but that was it. Many times I got on ProtonDB to check for my game compatibility and I don't experience half the issues other users have reported with other distros. Don't ask me for an explanation, I don't have one, I wish I did, but I just don't. It. Just. Works. No hassle, no fuss. Really!

Maybe its the fact that I've got a Xeon CPU or maybe that the parts are from 2015. I just don't know.

Yes, but what you failed to do is explain your implication as why you seem to believe that pop_os is somehow inferior to ubuntu. Its fast, its snappy, its responsive, its minimalistic in terms of installed apps, and that what it does have is exactly what I wanted as a platform to build upon. And it has some of the best tweaks to for workflow I've ever seen. As someone who abandoned windows 10 two years ago, I just had no problem transitioning whatsoever.

And those sytem 76 pc's, they're not some quirky woodoo boxes, they're your run of the mill, average, everyday pc's that system 76 puts in one of their own boxes. If anything, I'm the weirdo for putting it on a 2015 Xeon gaming rig, and even there, everything is absolutely fine.

While I don't dispute that it is dropping in popularity, I wholeheartedly dismiss your supposition of ubuntu being a better choice than pop_os. They are equal choices for beginners at worst.

To answer OP's question - you might need to completely change the desktop environment, as in remove this one, and install the one tweaked by ubuntu.

Would you really want to be committing to such an effort over such a little thing?

I never said it was inferior, just on some machines it may not run as efficient as Ubuntu due to the fact that Pop OS was designed for System76 machines and its relative hardware that comes with it - so if your non-System 76 machine (Dell, HP, Acer, whatever) has some of the same hardware as System 76 machines it should run just fine - if your machine does not then it may have some issues and you will be better off running Ubuntu - it's a compatibility thing

Benchmarks?
I said better, not faster. Drivers are preinstalled and actually curated, so there is no hassle. Unlike ubuntu, it doesn't come with a whole slew of packed gadgets and gizmos that I wouldn't have anything to do with. I prefer Systemd over Grub, and while I actually see an ubuntu loading screen, by the time there actually is an image in the screen of the pc I just turned on, pop_os is already asking for my login.

And while it is slower than arch, it is rock solid stable. It is also not a rolling release, so its not bitching for available updates 5 times a week. Debian in general has more comprehensive terminal commands, so pop_os inherited that feature. Sadly, no AUR, so that means no custom packages, and no automatic installation of all dependencies, but that's something I can live with.

It's probably worth noting that Pop!_OS is not a community driven project, but rather a single company operation, unlike debian or fedora. Ubuntu, although company managed, also has a community of developers associated with its OS. It may not be of any concern, but there is something to be said for the bazaar over the cathedral: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cathedral_and_the_Bazaar.

Oh, and benchmarking is not just about speed ... there's smoothness, efficiency, reliability ... there's lots of measurable variables.
