I've been installing as many distros as I can on an old laptop of mine. After about three operating systems, Grub starts imploding. I've topped out at 4. Is there an alternative to Grub that I can use to fix this?

What exactly is happening? Give details. There is always boot repair but it does not always work well and I don't usually recommend it.
boot Repair

What ever the last distro you installed usually controls grub.

Aye, that it is. But @Ant-Eye-Matter , you're gonna have to do better than that Laddie :)

What exactly is happening? Give details.

1. Which distros have you tried and in what order?
2. Specs on your computer - if you have a working distro, give us the output of the terminal command
Code:
inxi -Fxz

3. Have a read of the link from David G's signature "Learn how to ..."
4. Read my point 5. from my signature and tell us your motivation for multibooting.
5.
Is there an alternative to Grub that I can use...

Yes, there is rEFInd, for one, if you are on UEFI, but using it may not solve all your problems, maybe we should look at Grub first. I run 78 Distros on it with little to no problems.
