Anybody on here from the UK who knows about their railroads? (Not technical stuff, just in general.)

This was more for my own edification. I am a railfan and have been since my first electric train back in prehistoric times. Lately, I have been riding the rails via YouTube as a POV in the cabs of British railroads. From that aspect it looks as if their passenger trains are plentiful, fast, on-time, and immaculately maintained - a list that does not describe Amtrak in any way. Were I many years younger, I would vacation to Britain just to ride the trains.

But... In the general press I see many comments and articles lamenting the decline of British railways, how good they once were, how bad they are now, "The government should do something before it's too late.", etc.

What the heck? The two point of views don't touch anywhere. Thus the question for a native of that land. What am I not seeing?

the answer is political so see pm

in addition to BR we have many heritage railways which run on short sections of track with steam and early diesel and electric stock my mate is into steam railways and has been to most of them.
