Hello, I currently have a Dell 9110 desktop that is running win 10 with a asus router that linked (aimesh) with our main computer (win 11) connected to the internet. When I boot off the thumb drive that has Linux Mint on everything works great and I can access the internet. My goal is to delete win 10 off of the Dell 9110 and install Linux Mint permanently. My question is Im not quite sure how to proceed. When I delete win 10 off this computer are all the needed files, drivers etc. for the asus router going to go away? Any help or guidance would be appreciated, Thanks.

ok so boot your Mint ISO in to test mode, when it loads, open a terminal [little black icon bottom left of screen] type in inxi -Nn and look at the results, and let us see a copy of the report

G'day mark, Welcome to linux.org

When I boot off the thumb drive that has Linux Mint on everything works great and I can access the internet.
That is the test mode referred to above...also known as 'Live' mode.
Terminal can also be accessed via the Menu...clik on menu, type in Terminal...click on to open it.
Or, you can tap the ctrl +alt+T keys and that will also open it

Copy and paste the
Code:
inxi -Nn
in...it is more accurate, avoids typo's.

copy and paste the result to your next reply.

Is this Linux Mint 22.1 ?

That result looks very much the same as mine....So I think everything will work ok when windows is wiped by installing Linux....but to be certain the wise thing to do would to wait for @Brickwizard to confirm this.

He is located in sunny downtown UK, ....I think the time is around 9pm (?)...so we may not see him until he rises in the AM.

There are others here who will know, definitely.....I will mention their names here....they may swing by and save us some wait time.

@osprey
@GatorsFan

Nothing you need to do....their member's name mentioned here will alert them

@Brickwizard has only just gone offline in the last 10 minutes or so...he may see this now, or maybe not

Hi Brian, and @mark10409

that report is exactly what I would expect for a machine hard-wired to the router, it is not showing a device 2 so I would assume no Wi-Fi is connected

The installation of linux on that desktop should proceed without any issues. The drivers for the hardware, and in particular for that ethernet card shown in post #6, are in the linux kernel so there will be no need to seek drivers from elsewhere. Best to ensure the connection of the ethernet to a modem/router before starting a new installation.

There is no need to delete windows from the drive before a linux installation because the linux installer in mint will take care of that. One only needs to start the installation and read the screen and follow the instructions to get a default installation. If you'd like to see what a mint installation looks like before you actually do it, there's a guide here: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install.html

Before the installation it would be wise to ensure the following:
the BIOS/UEFI is set to UEFI
the SATA operation is set to AHCI
secure boot is disabled
fast boot is disabled.

When you have it Installed fully, Enable the Firewall.

FIREWALL --ufw....uncomplicated Firewall (In terminal)

sudo ufw enable

check it's on?... sudo ufw status

It will enable itself automatically going forward, after reboots/shut downs etc etc....even after hard shutdowns

Oh Wow! it was off! Thank you for the heads up!

It maybe a reasonable idea (especially if you have an external drive with sufficient space available, formatted as ext4) to set up Timeshift.

Timeshift in a nutshell; https://teejee2008.github.io/timeshift/ ......*******
Timeshift is similar to applications like rsnapshot, BackInTime and TimeVault but with different goals. It is designed to protect only system files and settings. User files such as documents, pictures and music are excluded. This ensures that your files remains unchanged when you restore your system to an earlier date. If you need a tool to backup your documents and files please take a look at the excellent BackInTime application which is more configurable and provides options for saving user files.

You do not need to install it in LM22.1 ...it is already there

This is a good guide. Fairly straightforward.

How many snapshots to keep?

There is my schedule

Your needs etc etc may vary. Experience will likely be your best guide.

I also choose to include the following: Have a read about it.

and

That arrangement takes a fir bit of space.
On the occasions that I have managed to really screw things up....I have found it worthwhile

your router is independent of your computer and needs no drivers of any kind. They are not connected in that way. so you can go ahead and dump windows. drivers are not needed for routers.
