Hello everyone!

I hope I'm in the right place for a question like this.

I got the idea to wipe a surplus Chromebook clean and install Linux Mint. This worked and the installation was flawless - until I tried to play audio.

I know my way around Linux to survive and use everyday, but this seems beyond what I already know. My Chromebook is an HP 14A G5 type. I've also noticed that I have issues booting up the GUI unless it's set to nomodeset. I had another computer I tried to put Linux on and same thing - I was met with the login screen, but after that, the screen went black with what looked like tiny scan lines and no usable desktop. At the current moment, I'm only running it in CLI mode.

I know that this has something to do with the GPU as I get warnings about missing firmware for amdgpu. Does anyone else have any experience with this problem?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome
this machine has caused any number of audio problem particularly with Arch and Ubuntu [and its family] distributions, and fixes seem to be hit-and-miss, I therefore suggest you try another distribution, Mint LMDE, MX-Linux or Peppermint Linux and see if it has the same effect [you can run the alternatives in trial mode to do the test [I had to do this with my HP desktop]

is it the same model? If not please quote full make and model number

Good to know, I'll try those distros and see if anything improves. Is there one you feel is better suited for a Chromebook over the other?

It was actually another HP laptop that originally had Windows 10 on it, but since the HDD was corrupted originally I swapped out the drive and threw Linux on. Worked fine for a few months but then started to glitch out before I threw nomodeset in the works.

the problem with any Chromebook is they are entry level machines made down to a price to do one job run Google Chrome, most are not upgradable, the reason I mentioned the distros above is they are all lighter than Mint22 and Ubuntu, peppermint being the lightest, you could also try Linux-Lite

A bit of an update...

I tried all of the distros but none of them worked. I guess I'll just have to use a USB sound card :(

Thank you for the help though!

The closest i got to audio working with an old Dell 3120 chromebook was with Gallium OS, which is no longer supported but still available. The audio worked but was flaky. I now run it on AntiX, with a USB sound card, and that setup runs great. Just an FYI.
