Change distros or just rename...

Well, that was quick! Today (Friday) was Georgie's first birthday. She's a strange little dog but she wouldn't fit in around here if she wasn't.

Georgie made out pretty well in the show ring again last weekend, earning another couple of points toward her AKC championship. Alas, all of her points so far have been in shows worth two points but to earn a championship she needs to win in at least three shows worth three points or more (three 3-point "majors"). The number of points a show is worth derives from the number of dogs shown in a given breed and, often, all it takes is for one exhibitor to not show up to "break the major" - it doesn't matter how many dogs are entered, only how many actually show.

I think she looks a lot better in this picture than she did in the previous one, which was her birthday picture.

She is like a miniature statue !

So there's this big 4-day Cardigan show going on in Ohio. Georgie won Winners Bitch for a five-point major (*) yesterday. We won't get the professional photos for a week or two but a friend took a not-so-professional pic after the fact.

*) TLDR regarding "major": To become an AKC conformation champion, a dog needs to win 15 points including at least two wins of three or more points in a single show, known as a "major" show. The number of dogs shown in a given breed determines the number of points points the show is worth and the number varies by breed. Popular breeds, like German Shepherds, need a lot of dogs to make a point while less common breeds, like Cardigan Welsh Corgis, don't need very many. The problem with the popular breeds is that, to win a "major" show, your dog has to win over a -lot- of other dogs. The problem with Cardigans is that, even though it doesn't take as many dogs, it's hard to find a show with enough dogs showing to make a "major" show. So winning a major, especially a five pointer, is a fairly big deal.

Then there's today. Georgie did not win any points today (different judges, possibly some different dogs competing, different phase of the moon, etc)... but little sister Tater did! Also for a five point major. Yay Tater!

I guess yesterday was a pretty big day for some pretty smol dogs. They both crashed last night. For sheer adorableness, this picture is actually better than the ones with ribbons.

Today, they both took second place in their respective classes so they each got ribbons - just not those great big ones. ;)

Well, no great news from Saturday or Sunday. They each got a "placement", with at least a modest ribbon, every time they were in the ring for the whole weekend, but no more points. Not complaining mind you - it was a very good weekend for both of the youngsters and the spare human and Dolly and I stayed home and had lots of treats, too.

We finally got the picture from Georgie's show success at Beaver Falls, PA a couple of weeks ago. I actually like the picture from early July better than this one, but "best of breed" makes it a good picture. ;) Tater wasn't entered in this show.

Well, Miss Georgie got some points at a show in Ohio last weekend. Sadly, only two points where what she needs is one more 3 point "major", so she's still not an official champion. No more shows for her until spring, so that'll be something to look forward to for next year. Same for Tater, though she has a little further to go. I'm putting together an "electronic picture frame" to conveniently display their pictures.

Well, when that first snow hit our area a few weeks ago, I let the girls out to play in the back yard. When the back yard is not frozen or under drought conditions, it's usually such a mud hole that I just take them out to the front on leash to do their business, so the snow was a welcome break for me. But, as I was letting them out the door, it occurred to me that this might be Tater's first experience with snow. She was born in January, in Wisconsin, but I suspect spring had sprung before she was old enough to go outdoors. So I got my phone ready to take some stills and videos. The best thing I got, and it's not all that great, was a frame from one of the videos. That's Tater in the middle, Georgie on the left and Dolly on the right. Pretty sure they liked it!

They have 'fun' written all over their faces !

Well, the girls - Georgie and Tater - are off to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi nationals with a possibility that one of them will come back as an AKC champion. Georgie only needs a "major" (a win in a show worth three or more points) to finish her championship. Of course, at a show that size, there will be a bunch of competition to beat - some of which might actually be deemed better.

If no luck this week, there's a multi-show weekend coming up at New Castle, PA.

Give 'em hell, Georgie ! Show them how it's done !

Today's the big day for the show, as far as conformation is concerned. We have an extra handler lined up in case Georgie and Tater both win their age groups and have to compete against each other... It would be inconvenient, but I sure hope it happens.

In the mean time, they both got their "Farm Dog" certifications on Wednesday... which basically means they didn't attack the ducks, so now they can add "FDC" onto the end of their names. Hoping to add "CH" to the beginning of Georgie's name after today.

Hope all goes well!

Tater got some nice ribbons but no points.

Georgie got skunked entirely.

This is the downside of having enough competition to "major" show - there's more likely to be a better dog out there. And of course different judges prioritize different features and some are even rumored to judge "the other end of the leash" (favoring professional handlers and such), though I wouldn't be surprised if that's just sour grapes on the part of those who's dogs don't get picked.

Chin up Georgie, better days ahead, mate.

Well, that's official. Georgie did indeed draw the short straw this time around... but we love her anyway. Her 2nd birthday is coming up in just five weeks and there's another big show coming up this weekend, so we'll find a reason to celebrate her. ;)

Tater, on the other hand, got first place in her class (age group) in the "sweepstakes" and second place in her class a couple of days later. The first picture is much better - that's how she's supposed to look. Some of Tater's litter mates did well at the show, too.

Why is the first pic better than the second ? Maybe just a tad clearer ?
