cannot install linux on my macbook pro

the macbook acted funny last time i tried to boot it.. the boot chime was on a loop and now it just refuses to boot.. i think the Philippine electricity finally killed it...
it makes a new sound now... very faint... but no activity whatsoever... sounds like its gone...

the macbook finally bit it... im very sorry to have wated any of your time.. the screen will not illuminate.. but the mainbody still turns on.... so i removed everything of value and made an oath to the allfather that i will never buy apple again...

have a great day everyone..

I have a MP6.1 Trash can, I am having difficulty with the ALT key on startup, I have an aftermarket mac keyboard and I think the key is not working without the MAC os up and running . I think I might have to buy an f%$king expensiv keyboard unless there is a nother way to get to the Start Manager. :(

Welcome!

You might have better luck with starting a new thread, as this one is a bit dated.
I do know that you can use a PC keyboard on an M1, it's just the Fruit Co rearranged the keys into a different layout. I have an old IMac- I will soon try it out on there. Should not be too much different.

I do think it is the Winkey on an old dell keyboard ( I just installed MX on it not too long ago ) that did get me to the boot manager. Any old pc keyboard should work if you have one lying around.

If not- you can test if it is your keyboard with other key combos on startup.
Possibly PRAM-issues if it still does not work
Here is a site from apple with a few to test-
If you have another Mac to test you keyboard on- it can help see if it is the keyboard or the Mac.

Hope this helps!

It’s the OPT key, not ALT.
I installed MX on a 2010 MBP (from CD) and a 2011 MBA (from USB, using YUMI).
When booted up, just tell MX to erase everything.

Oh yeah option. Thanks what it is. Seems that Big Sur stopped providing boot screen. Nothing shows up until the desktop is ready..

I advise using rEFInd, works like a charm. For detailed information please visit https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/. I have installed it onto my MacBook Air 2012 and works perfect, even when booting from usb-drives.

Refind will solve every boot problem you'll might have. In fact, I even didn't install grub to my tripple boot system, haha, refind will boot it all without issue. Highly recommended ! My boot options are "linux Debian", "linux Manjaro" and "MacOS 12" :)
Cheers !
Eddy
