I use a GIGABYTE GB-BRR7H-4800 and LM 22.3 Cinnamon 64 bit with the new 6.17.0-14 kernel. A couple of days ago I had a notification that the scheduled
backup failed - see image. I use TimeShift for system backups onto an external SSD. This has two partitions, one for system and one for data backups. For the data backups I use Duplicity. I cannot find Duplicity in the Menu. When I go to Software Manager and to the Duplicity app it shows "Launch" in green and "Remove" in red as if I do have it. Can anybody suggest how to proceed?

Hmm...

I just checked, and Duplicity is indeed missing. It won't even start from the terminal. I tried purging it and reinstalling it, but that didn't help.

Something is broken somewhere.

Timeshift uses rsync. I think deja dup/duplicity also uses rsync as the backend, but I haven't used it in a long time. I don't like its file format, and it just didn't work well for me. For my /home backup, plain old rsync works well. I use timeshift for backing up / daily because it makes the process easier for me.

(SOLVED)Thank you, all of you. I am trying what deb_user suggested but following the thread I have been prompted to look up all sorts of things to do with backing up systems and files which has given me confidence to tackle this. But you can bet your boots I'll be back !! I suspect TimeShift is the default for LM for a reason.

I suspect TimeShift is the default for LM for a reason.
The reasons different developers have different packages when they may have several to choose from, would be mainly compatibility with their particular build [and are usually tested to be the most suitable] and may have some minor changes to make it so.
