I use to live off of a long road like this. It was hell on suspension when it needed grading and the county was never in a hurry to do it.
People often talk about being "in the middle of nowhere" but that sign looks like it might be a little off center, maybe closer to one edge of "nowhere".
Is that dirt track the "highway"? Maybe we could send some PennDOT workers to install pot holes.

Yes, it most certainly is the highway.
It has... character !
There is a 'peace' that comes with being out in parts like that. The people who live out there talk more slowly than others closer to cities etc. I guess they figure they have a lot of time to =say whatever it is they have to say, so they may as well take their time.
being at the latitude that it is, the heat there is a dry heat...not a great deal of humidity, if any. All the same the heat will kill you if you are not prepared...hat. cotton long sleeves, water, water and water... and common sense.
The further north you travel from there (toward the top of Australia) the himidity intensifies....big time. it becomes tropical, and that is very hard to take/cope with.
In the wet season, the temp climbs to 35 or higher and stays there, and monsoonal rains dont stop.
It drives people troppo. There is evidence that 'going troppo' is real...it is a thing.. I spent some time in Darwin some years back and can vouch for it.
Is there evidence that 'going troppo' is actually a thing?
Are you actually going crazy when it's 35 degrees and the humidity is through the roof, or does it just feel like it? Curious Darwin takes a look at the "going troppo" phenomenon.

I usually think of a "highway" as being, at least, paved and usually multi-lane but I guess if the environment doesn't call for pavement then why waste the money on it.
Getting my expectations flipped over like that reminds me of seeing the "Big Thompson River" in Colorado. Having lived my entire life in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I have this mental image of what constitutes a "river" and I thought the Big Thompson was a really big creek ("crick") but a sorry excuse for a "river". I guess given the terrain in the Rocky Mountains, water doesn't hang around long enough to form navigable waterways. Sadly, there was a plaque along the river commemorating the occasion in 1976 when it briefly decided to show off its "river" credentials and killed a bunch of people.

I think we have to do a fresh vision exam every five years after reaching 75 years of age.
I think that's the only real rule. I'll find out soon enough.

In my state of NSW..if 75 you need an medical every year but when you renew your license every 5 years you do an eye test regardless of age.
The video I posted is just some youtube clown trying to scare people...If you watch the video you'll notice many spelling mistakes and the Australian coat of arms is wrong...two certain giveaways.
In one part they spell Australia...AustraliAA...since when does the Federal Government notify people on youtube or set road rules for each state.

We hand out driver's licenses just for the asking here. They darned near come in boxes of cereal. I'm amazed at how few fatalities we have on our roads. Oh, it's still a huge number. I'm just constantly amazed that it isn't a higher number. We've made vehicles so safe that they're now surviving accidents that would have killed them just a decade or two ago.
We also lack public transportation in the vast majority of the country. Outside of some densely urban areas, public transport is often non-existant. So, that means we "need" to drive. Where I live, way out in the bush, it'd be extremely difficult for people without the ability to drive, especially if they're younger people and need to drive to get to and from work. If you don't have a driver's license, you're relying on someone who does.
I'm a very passionate person when it comes to driving and automobiles. Just about every morning sees me off on a driving adventure, usually of the spirited variety and taking into account things like the conditions and the vehicle being driven.
But, when it reaches the point where I'm no longer safe to drive, I've got a missus that's much younger than I am and has learned how to properly control a vehicle. At my urging, she's even gone to a rally school for quite a few lessons. It is my opinion that learning how to drive a rally race car will teach you more about car control than any other driving school. This is very true for my area, which is often enveloped in weather systems that can impact the safety of the roads. So, if you really want to have fun and learn good car control, visit your nearest rally school.
It doesn't matter how hard it is to get a driver's license...it doesn't stop the morons on the road who just don't care about road rules...and I wonder how some people get a license.
