My son should know the answer to this one, but he won't be up for another five hours.

Nope, you won’t lose your Steam progress

Your Steam account and cloud saves stay the same no matter which operating system you use. As long as the game supports Steam Cloud, your progress will sync automatically when you log in on Linux.

For games that don’t use cloud saves (like 7 Days to Die if you host local worlds), you can still copy your save files manually. They’re usually stored in:
C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\Saves

On Linux, once you install Steam (or run it through Wine/Lutris/Proton), you can just copy those save folders into the same location under your Linux prefix — and everything should load fine.

Bonus tip: If you’re moving to Linux full-time, keep a small backup of your save folder just in case — it saves a lot of headaches later.
