Hey everyone. Is there any configuration I can do to get more speed/Memory out of this classic box LoL ?? Circumstances prevent me from the obvious of upgrading my ram sticks right now. I'm in sort of a jam at the moment. Anything I run stalls intermittently especially Firefox v123. Above is my current specs. Not SSD drive either if that wasn't obvious. I hope I posted my specs in the correct spot, if not, please correct me on that. It's my first time posting my system info. Thanks, have a great day !!

At least you have a 64-bit CPU. If you can't upgrade the RAM, reduce the OS burden. Mint Cinnamon is just too much, I guess. MX might run okay if you give it a try, but its lighter cousin, antiX, is probably a better choice. Slax, EasyOS, and Puppy Linux are all pretty lightweight, and there are others. Here's a 2024 Review to list a few more. Window Managers are easier on resources than Desktop Environments. Good luck!

I appreciate your reply. I've been thinking about changing OS. Thanks !! And I'm working on upgrade laptops also but I'm very cheap lol. And broke at the moment lol.

I have a 12 year old Asus Laptop...64bit...i5 CPU but has only 4GB of Ram...runs Mint Cinnamon 21.1 just fine.

A few years ago it was running Linux lite which is easy to use...you could give that a go.

Checking your specs it looks like it will take up to 8GBs of RAM and upgrade your HD to a SSD - I have a Dell Latitude E6530 around 2013 time frame and I upgrade the CPU from a Core2Duo to a quad core, RAM to 16GBs, and the HD to a SSD at 256GBs

Thank you !!

You're welcome...I forgot to mention I replaced the HDD about 3 years ago with a 500GB SSD which makes a big difference.
m1211.gif
I've been reading that an SSD is more helpful than a big RAM upgrade. My brother runs a newer CHEAP Dell laptop that only has 4Gb of ram but he replaced the HDD with an inexpensive SSD and it's really fast in multi tasking and streaming HD, way better than when he bought it. That's exactly why I reached out to you guys, great input !!

Linux Mint has always been fast but on an SSD it's at least 10 times faster.
m1203.gif

Ram doesn't make your computer go faster...the more Ram you install...the more you can Multi-Task.
m1211.gif

My Tower has 16GB of DDR4 Ram...it runs just as fast as my Laptop but I can have several browsers open...run a VM...Download things etc all at the same time...something I can't do with my Laptop.

I've never put more Ram in the Laptop as I'm not a Laptop person and only use it once or twice a year but handy to have in case something happens to My Tower as did last year.

your using a classic 1545
Yep, it was a busted one I picked up just over 10 years ago, [it still has some issues and will need replacing at some time but for now remains usable] I don't need anything high speed [not a gamer] but easy to use and reliable, and Dell have always met my needs.

That's awesome your using a classic 1545 too !! I will upgrade the ram sticks soon, I'm just in a bad way right now, temporarily. I did find the following ZSWAP config that I used and "seems" to stop most of the temporary freeze/lag so far or maybe It's just having a good morning lol. I'm ordering RAM upgrade sticks this weekend, the shipping costs more than the RAM. I'm still trying to figure out how to update the bios .EXE. I tried a few things like "DOS" in Virtual Box and a different imitation "DOS" in UnetBootin but cant get either to work so far. I do have the A-14 .exe file, mine is currently A-10 (2009) LOL.

When zswap is enabled: decrease swap use

1.2. On the hard disk there's a separate file or partition for virtual memory, called the swap. When Mint uses the swap too much, the computer slows down. At least when zswap has been turned on (see item 1.1 on this page).

Note: Don't fully disable the disk swap, no matter how much RAM your computer has! Not only because zswap needs it, but also because disabling the disk swap is a bad idea in general: it's counterproductive to do so and might degrade the performance of your system.

Mint's inclination to use the swap, is determined by a value called "swappiness". The lower the value, the longer it takes before Mint starts using the swap.

On a scale of 0-200, the default value is 60. Which is too high for normal desktop use; the optimal compromise is probably something like 30. Decreasing the default value somewhat on a desktop computer, has no negative side effects.

Now the how-to for setting the swappiness to a more reasonable level, namely 30:

a. First check your current swappiness value. Type in the terminal (use copy/paste):

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Press Enter.

The result will probably be 60.

b. To change the swappiness into a more sensible setting, type in the terminal (use copy/paste to avoid typos):

xed admin:///etc/sysctl.conf

Press Enter. Note that you'll be asked twice for your password.

Now a text file opens. Scroll to the bottom of that text file and add your swappiness parameter to override the default. For that, copy/paste the following two blue lines into the text file:

# Decrease swap usage to a more reasonable level
vm.swappiness=30

c. Save and close the text file. Then reboot your computer.

d. After the reboot, check the new swappiness setting:

- Launch a terminal window.
(You can launch a terminal window like this: Click)

- Type (use copy/paste):

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Press Enter.

Now it should be 30.

Dell product: Inspiron 1545
I do have the A-14 .exe file, mine is currently A-10 (2009)
Hmm, I find conflicting info. Are you sure about the A14 version?

This link shows Version A14 is for a Dell server.

This link shows Version A13 is the latest update, but it's only a few months newer in 2009. I'm not sure that would give any great benefit.

This link shows Version 6.5.0, A05 (2014) for Inspirion 1545. This version seems out of sequence from 2009, so I'm not sure about this.

I'm not sure... but you need to be sure. It may be very unforgiving if you try to flash the wrong one. Do be careful, especially after spending money to upgrade the RAM. Good luck!
