Hi all,

I have an Epson ET 2811 printer which is working fine as a printer out of all software, so I know the driver is working fine. However, when I go to scan pages to put into a document, the scanners won't recognise the printer? (Except Document Scan - Below - however it will not actually scan a page)

Any suggestions to resolve this issue gratefully received.

The Scanners I have been trying are: (All on Flathub)
  • VueScan
  • Epson Scan 2
  • Document Scan
  • Image Scan
Thank you

Linux Mint 22.2
Printer Epson ET 2811
Computer ASUS Vivobook

@TroyLinux :-

You'll need the "EpsonScan2" package as stated above.....and the FlatPaks won't work for this, due to the isolated/sandboxed nature of how they work.

You MUST fully install it using the .deb package from Epson's website, since only in this way can dpkg properly integrate the files into the system.

Once that's done, you should then be able to use ANY scanner software that takes your fancy. Personally, I use the KDE Project's "SkanLite".....which seems to work better than any of Epson's own GUI apps.

(shrug...)

Thank you. Are you able to give any specific guidance on how to install that? I've downloaded the file but don't have experience directly installing in this way (I usually use flatpaks or similar) Much appreciated. T

@TroyLinux :-

I only know what I stated above because I've never used any printer brand other than Epson.

Um; I haven't used the "mainstream" distros for years, so am rather rusty when it comes to their package management - 'Puppy' does things rather differently! - but as far as I know, the best way to install .deb packages under Mint would be via the use of gDebi.

You CAN simply click on the .deb, and it will install.....but that's ONLY the package itself. gDebi, on the other hand, links into the apt package management system, and as I understand it, will also pull in any additional dependencies that may be needed.

You MAY already have it installed, but I wouldn't know where to find it in the main Menu.....Utilities, perhaps?

If not, then it's simple enough to install. Open a terminal, type in

Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi

...and hit 'Enter'. That should do it.

I'll give one of our regular Mint users a shout:-

@Condobloke

He'll be able to confirm what I've said.....and may be able to help in other ways, too.

(Flatpaks are great for installing packages where dependencies are already on the system, and in any case usually come with needed stuff already included. Some stuff, however - and I know from experience that Epson's software falls under this category; it's often quite 'fussy', and rather 'old-school' - expects components to be in standardised locations within the file-system...../usr/bin, /usr/local/bin, /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib, etc. Flatpaks "throw a spanner in the works" here, simply because they reside under /var).

Thanks Mike, I used that command in the command prompt screen and a bunch of stuff did install. However no change on the scanners not picking up the printer. Please excuse my ignorance as I haven't got any experience with this. T

That's all right. We all had to learn this stuff at some point!

What you now need to do is to look for gDebi in the menu and launch it.....and then you need to use it to install the 'Epson Scan 2' .deb file for your printer/scanner model from the Epson website. We did the above to give you the best GUI app that works specifically for installing .deb files. (You could do this via the terminal, too, but most beginners find a GUI easier to work with).

I've been at this for a LONG time.....and even I still prefer a GUI, given the choice!

If you haven't already got it, download the 'Epson Scan 2' .deb file for your model (as others have demonstrated above). Then you should be getting somewhere...

Have managed to re-install the drivers and now it's working again. Thanks for your assistance

When I install my Epson Printer/Scanner...I always download and install the Drivers first.

Perhaps you didn't read my last comment Bob, but I did already do that and the scanner stopped working for some reason
