How to update and repair Archive Manager in Debian 11 Cinnamon

The default Archive manager of Debian 11 Cinnamon stopped prompt me to give a password in order to decrypt encrypted 7z files, it happens in any file. I'm able to decrypt the files with Xarchiver so the problem must be of the default Archive Manager of Cinnamon, its version is 3.38.1. I don't know how to update / repair this software, any help is welcomed and ask me for any clarification needed

You have the latest version for bullseye, there's no update.

You can try reinstall it with:

sudo apt reinstall file-roller

Thanks for the reply, I reinstalled it and restart and it is still the same, this distribution doesn't break but if it breaks it is broken, there is no fix

I think file-roller is integrated into Cinnamon, you can't blame distro for DE failures.
Since it's integrated this means trying to uninstall it may trigger to uninstall whole DE.

If you read the link I posted to package, it says this:

File-roller doesn't perform archive operations by itself, but relies on standard tools for this.

Your problem may actually be in one of those standard tools, or perhaps some option in the archiver's UI.

I know I must get a new laptop and put the latest Debian in it but my days are completely filled with my new found day job and I try to get comfortable with this heavy schedule I have. For now I predict 2026 going with this old machine and this old installation. Ι don't feel like doing any sort of computer maintenance for now at least, I only want some internet after work and thats all

i have been recently checking out this particular combination. the soon-to-become-eol "bullseye" with cinnamon desktop. but from the "big" iso which doesn't offer non-free firmware. i think it's debian 11.7. yeah it's old.

i don't know if this thing with file roller. is the same issue i've been having with spirallinux with cinnamon desktop. but with "bookworm" base. it actually saves "tar" files. but wrongly gives it ".tar.gz" suffix!

for that reason. i stopped using ".tar.gz" with any system under my control. switched to ".tar.xz". that certainly works. with engrampa and other archive managers as well.

might have to go with peazip. to fix some problems. but i didn't like that program. desired for once to go with something. which was not engrampa nor file roller. to replace xarchiver. i didn't want to use winrar. which is clunky and requires wine. also the 7-zip file manager which i've used even less. long ago i purchased a license for winrar. desired to use "rar" program to handle packing and unpacking. but frustratingly, "rar" program creates only its own format. if it could also create at least "zip". i would have used it even if i had to include wine for it.

if you must go with debian "bullseye". i strongly suggest switching to lxqt. or maybe xfce. this is because i almost botched my installation with cinnamon. deleted the panel by mistake. left the desktop half-functional. had to search internet. to a post on linux mint forums. to bring up the "cinnamon debugger". press "super+L". to "reset" the desktop which restored the panel. on spirallinux had problems with cpu usage from the desktop. one day while running a fairly routine hobbyist programming project. the desktop locked up totally. had to force log-off from "tty". had to search internet for a solution to that as well. it hasn't happened again for almost 1-1/2 years though. not sure why it happened.

xfce is quite fast. but not a lot of programs come installed on it. you might want to put in gimp and libreoffice. at least the latter is available as appimage. that runs on that old system.

That archive manager is named File-roller. It generally sucks and tends to break for no obvious reasons. I abandoned it years ago (meaning uninstalled it) and installed engrampa which works flawlessly. In the very, very rare cases engrampa can't do it, the CLI archive tool 7zip does the job.

BTW there is no way to edit and update an encrypted file with Xarchiver, I tried for half an hour, if it was possible I guess I would have found it, such a stupid program lol. No guys those are encrypted files and trusted not stupid handler program is needed, you can't just go around and pick one this time
