You can install the steam client directly from their official website (it has worked for me) https://store.steampowered.com/about/
In my case, I use Debian and after I downloaded the steam_latest.deb file I open the terminal on the location of that file, e.g. If It is located under downloads folder I'll right click on the downloads window to open the contextual menu and then I select "open in terminal" and after that I simply put:
and that's it. After it install all the missing files it is good to go, tough sometimes It tend to have delay when opening the client I don't know why.
I installed steam before while following the steps on how to do so in a youtube video but for some reason sometimes it didn't even launch (maybe it's because it was an unofficial version of the software)
