For commercial customers wanting to stick to legacy Ubuntu Long Term Support (LTS) releases, Canonical will now provide the paid support for up to 15 years. This 15 year support window goes into effect with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and newer LTS versions.

While it is a paid support package, it is an impressive commitment by Canonical. They made major changes meanwhile, like switching from their own Unity desktop back to GNOME.
Also, it expands the support of 32-bit x86 automatically. I wonder how they will organise supporting packages on 32-bit desktops once upstream ceases to provide updates.

a good time to create an account with ubuntu pro. so i have an excuse anyhow. to use that oddball freespire "focal" with kde plasma desktop i have lying around.

erm so to get five more years. one has to pay right? while for "only" ten years it's free?

Yes. Though, you could also help the Ubuntu team enough to be considered an 'official member', in which case Ubuntu Pro is typically free for five computers. So, there's that avenue.

For private individuals this is a free contingent in any case (hello Redhat, listening?). The five extra years are indeed linked to their Enhanced add-on - which is different (prior to this change it offered two extra years on top of Pro).
