Mint 21.1 Vera, looking good for Christmas

no seatbelt ?

A seat belt won't save your bum from being hurt - if the crash is significant enough! (They're great, otherwise, but sometimes the impact is just too much for a simple seat belt!)

What we need to do is ground Wiz until his carpet has been thoroughly inspected, repaired, and deemed airworthy by the appropriate governing bodies in his jurisdiction!

I am well past beer-thirty with nothing to do until I shamble up the stairs for sleep.

And now you know...

...and deemed airworthy by the appropriate governing bodies in his jurisdiction!

That would be difficult, turned them into toads at the last inspection, hard for them to hold a pen or stamp now.

Got rid of the seatbelt because its tethering point was causing too much drag. Got myself a surfboard rider's leg rope, it works.

But that's not the funny part.

One of the inspectors insisted on coming for a ride before he would sign off on the leg rope modification. I offered him a leg rope and he declined.

We hit turbulence a few minutes out and both went over. He grabbed for my wizard's robe, which went over my head like a tent (ugly sight, pays to wear underwaer after all, some times). Well it was like being on a bungee rope and with the second bounce, he lost his grip.

His final resting place is at several spots either side of the Queensland New South Wales border.

When I landed, the rest of his crew wanted to refer me for police charges for disrobing in a public place. It was the fricking sky, for heaven's sake.

...and THAT was when I turned them into toads.

On a scale of whatever, which is worse, being turned into a newt or a toad?

I once knew a woman who felt she could change the world with the right sort of thoughts, incantations, and material goods (spell components, for a real-ish word).

I suggested voting and activism, but she was having none of it. The last time I saw her, she was in a topless protest, 'cause she felt women should be allowed to go topless like men could. While I agreed in spirit, the actual visual results of said spectacle made me consider the idea of making men wear shirts in public too.

That is a major problem and it's not just Mint.

Bug reporting is something we should all do, in theory. However, it's usually a god-awful mess of convolution. I can perfectly understand why people don't report bugs. I don't blame them.

I've 'mastered' the Ubuntu method, but it's still a pain in the butt.
The problem is much larger and far more serious than mere bug reporting. Very few companies have any published contacts or a process to report and manage security issues. Imagine this scenario:

A company's networks has been hacked and there are active intruders. You have no affiliation with the company, but uncover hard, incontrovertible proof that it is happening. You want to do the right thing and notify them. How do you contact the company? Who do you report it to? Good luck figuring that out.

If it happens to you, do not expect a warm welcome or any appreciation for your effort. Do not expect the company to take it seriously, no matter how serious the issue. Do you have detailed information about the attack to provide? They will not want to see it.

If you are interested in this topic and want to learn more, start your web search with "responsible disclosure".

While true, that's kinda a whole other discussion.

...that's kinda a whole other discussion.

My bad, I opened the door above with silly stuff.

Let's get back to Linux Mint basics and talk Vera stuff.

Cheers all

I have posted the below to :

""Serious fault encountered. “File not downloaded. Potential security risk” (This was an attempt via Internode mirror (australia) to download LM21.1 64 bit, on firefox browser Then on brave browser . “Integrity check failed…the sha256 sums file does not contain sums for this iso image”"

Have I missed anything?.....

After reading the posts above, I went to the Linux Mint website downloads. I downloaded the same Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1 installer .iso file from both Internode (Australia) and Open Computing Facility at UC Berkeley (US). Both SHA 256 checksums matched the one on Linux Mint's website.

It was stupid, but I also ran diff between the two downloads. No difference, of course.

Thank you for doing that

whether the 'drama' encountered was at Internodes end or at Linux Mints end ....I do not know.

Hopefully Clem can shine a light.

The 'issues' encountered by @bob466 were serious enough

Nice one @sphen , it's good to see someone go the extra yards. :)

I have encounter no problems with Mint 21.1 Cinnamon or XFCE here. It's been smooth sailing so far.

^^^....ditto here...running cinnamon

@kc1di ...any preference?...cinnamon vs xfce?

The reason I ask is, I read various pieces where it is suggested that xfce development is at a standstill.

I like them both. XFCE development is not at a standstill in fact they just released 4.18 (Mint still uses 4.16) But the newer version should be in Mint sometime next year. One of the beauties of XFCE is it is always stable. The Dev's do not rush putting out a desktop until it is stable. They have no time table for releases and take their time in making sure it works well. XFCE has always been a slowly developed DE, that has not changed in many years. But it for the most part is rock solid and used by many of us old timers because it is. If I have a machine that is a bit older I usually will go for XFCE. New I like Cinnamon also don't get me wrong its a good DE but may not be appropriate for older less capable machines. Though the differences between XFCE, Cinnamon and KDE have been narrowed over the years, XFCE is still a great desktop.. Takes a little more work to get it the way you want it than the others but well worth the effort. HNY :)

Apparently some people are getting corrupted downloads of Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-bit v21.1 from the Internode (Australia) server. Others, including me, are not. The reasons are unknown. I would not jump to any conclusions about the root cause of the Internode download issues.

I copied the SHA 256 checksums from the Linux Mint website and posted them here. People with concerns can compare these checksums with the ones on the Linux Mint website. The top checksum matches my downloads. I did not check the other two:
  • *linuxmint-21.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso
    • 2df322f030d8ff4633360930a92d78829d10e515d2f6975b9bdfd1c0de769aca
  • *linuxmint-21.1-mate-64bit.iso
    • f7fb9c0500e583c46587402578547ea56125e0a054097f9f464a2500830c8b25
  • *linuxmint-21.1-xfce-64bit.iso

It is a good idea to verify the integrity of all files you download from the internet whenever you can. More than anything else, it assures you that your copy of the file is correct. It is no fun to install something and spend hours trying to troubleshoot it, only to learn that there was a glitch when you downloaded the installer. One "do-over" can take more time than verifying checksums as you go.

To compute the SHA 256 hash (checksum) posted by Linux Mint, use the following command:
Code:
shasum -a 256 <filename>

What I do for every file I download:
  • If they post a hash checksum, compute it and verify that the result matches.
    • You may encounter a PGP signature for verifying a downloaded file. Learning how to verify a PGP signature may be more challenging for beginners.
  • Check it on the VirusTotal website.
    • Some files are too large for VirusTotal. Linux .iso installers are too large.
    • VirusTotal is owned by Google, in case anyone cares.

The reasons are unknown. I would not jump to any conclusions about the root cause of the Internode download issues.

LOL I'd not only jump to conclusions, I'd not even begin to speculate.

Note that so far the blurb I posted at post#69 has disappeared from the linuxmint.com comments.

Hopefully they are "moderating" said comments.......I won't hold my breath, however.

Huh... I can't think of a reason why they'd remove your comment.
