touch tablet architecture

My last nonFOSS device just died, my tablet. I would like to replace it with another touch device; one that I can run on Linux. Given the limited touch / mobile support in Linux, I understand that this may not be a straightforward undertaking. Is there a hardware platform (android, chrome, windows) that will minimize my pain? Bonus points if you've already got a specific hardware + distro combination that works.
