There are some convoluted tutorials out there. It's really just three commands to install it 'properly'. It's four commands if you're using an older version of Ubuntu, but the more recent versions automatically run 'sudo apt update' after adding repos.
Why Sublime Text? Well, it's pretty solid and quite a few people like it. Enough people like it to make it a viable product for more than a decade. It is both proprietary and technically trialware, though it works in perpetuity well enough.
