ThinkPad T220 and T420: ultra-rugged—so what would be a worthy and robust successor here?

What is the main difference between a ThinkPad E14 and a T14?

The TP E14 is actually made of metal—specifically an aluminum chassis—so at first glance, I wonder: what extra value does the T-series actually offer?

My girlfriend has an E14 Gen 3 (I believe with an AMD CPU), and I find the E14 to be very robust. The chassis and hinges are extremely sturdy (see below), so I’d say it could be a successor to my current daily-driver notebooks—the T420/T520 and X220.

Regarding the manufacturer specifications for the ThinkPad E14 and T14:

Compared to the ThinkPad E14, the T-series offers a more rigid and durable material mix (glass-fiber reinforced plastic/magnesium instead of the E14's primarily plastic base), higher-quality and brighter display options (factory-standard sRGB with higher nit ratings), and a more extensive range of professional features.

Chassis and Stability/Material: The E14 often features only an aluminum lid (and sometimes an aluminum bottom cover), while the internal chassis is made of plastic. The T-series uses a sturdier internal metal sub-frame combined with glass-fiber reinforced plastic or magnesium, which minimizes flexing during daily use.

Feel & Coating: The T-series features the classic, grippy "soft-touch" finish, whereas the E-model has smoother surfaces.

Weight & Dimensions: The T14 is noticeably thinner, more compact, and slightly lighter than the bulkier E14. Here are my thoughts on this: Hmm—I wouldn't need those razor-thin notebooks; the weight saved there isn't really a priority for me.

As for my use cases: I mainly need a notebook to handle a few everyday tasks—reading emails and writing text. Occasionally, I might also edit some graphics using GIMP or Inkscape.

Here’s what I’m using:

first of all i run linux ... on all systems.
I still have a few older T420 and T520 models, as well as an X220—mechanically speaking, and in terms of chassis durability, they are truly indestructible. I much prefer working with these T420/T520 units and the X220, simply because of their ruggedness.

the plan: I upgrade them and pop in a few extra RAM modules.

btw: I also have a Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Ultrabook (see: https://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Lenovo-ThinkPad-13-Ultrabook.164863.0.html).

In everyday use, the Ultrabook isn't as rugged—it can't handle as much stress. Not by a long shot.

For example: If you open the screen wide—or carry the open notebook in your hands—the screen simply wobbles; it tends to open further and further on its own, potentially reaching 180 degrees and making it look like the display is about to snap off.

For these reasons, when it comes to "mobile work," the sturdier, more rugged older ThinkPad models are definitely my favorites.

Regarding upgrading the T420, T520, and X220:

I believe you can get an overview of the hardware using these two commands:

...though I assume that the T420s and T520 should take the exact same RAM modules, right?

I feel that the durability of this notebook simply doesn't compare to that of the T420, T520, or X220. Not by a long shot.

The Ultrabook stays at home—it doesn't go on trips, not on bike rides, not to the university library—nowhere.
That’s how I upgrade the T420, T520, and X220 models—they take up to 16 GB of RAM. I’m planning to upgrade at least once or twice.
Then add an SSD, too—I think that makes sense.
